In a stunning finale that combined culinary skill with theatrical flair, Ginger Johnson has been crowned the winner of Celebrity MasterChef 2025. The drag performer, whose real name is Donald Marshall, triumphed over former rugby star Alun Wyn Jones and broadcaster Dawn O'Porter to claim the coveted title.
A Winning Menu from a Bygone Era
Johnson secured victory with a brilliantly executed 1970s dinner party-themed menu, a concept born from her love of the decade's art, fashion, and music. The winning three-course feast comprised a Bloody Mary prawn cocktail, a classic duck a l'orange, and culminated in a spectacular flaming baked Alaska.
Speaking immediately after host Gregg Wallace announced her win, an emotional Johnson expressed sheer disbelief. "I cannot believe this, I'm so shocked," she said. "I really thought I was going to come here and have a laugh. I can't believe this is the end result... I've actually learned a real life skill."
Judges Praise an 'Extraordinary' Talent
The judges were unanimous in their praise for the drag queen's unique approach. Veteran judge John Torode highlighted the perfect blend of entertainment and substance. "With all the presentation, all the fun, the laughs, her food tastes delicious and she's an extraordinary cook," he stated. "For me, that's why she is our champion."
Grace Dent, presenting her first full series, was equally impressed by Johnson's consistent ambition. "Throughout this entire competition Ginger has delivered these intriguing, inventive, exciting, imaginative, difficult feats," Dent remarked. She added a crucial insight: "You've always put on a show and made us laugh, but at the root of it there is a serious cook."
A New Chapter for a Beloved Show
The 2025 series marks a period of significant change for the long-running BBC programme. Dent replaced former co-host Gregg Wallace after he was dismissed following misconduct allegations. Furthermore, this series was John Torode's last; the Australian chef was also sacked after an allegation of using racist language was upheld in an internal investigation.
Torode will be succeeded by Irish chef Anna Haugh from the next series of MasterChef: The Professionals. Despite the behind-the-scenes turbulence, the final, filmed earlier this year, provided a joyous and memorable conclusion.
Johnson becomes the 20th winner of the celebrity edition, joining a prestigious list of former champions that includes Strictly's Vito Coppola, opera singer Wynne Evans, and Pussycat Dolls star Kimberly Wyatt. For Johnson, the experience has ignited a new passion. "Being part of this competition has pushed me to be adventurous," she reflected. "I've caught the bug for the food and the competition."
