Former WAG Lizzie Cundy is set to make her West End debut at the age of 45 in a new musical that satirises footballers' wives. The ex-wife of former Chelsea and Tottenham player Jason Cundy will star alongside Olivier Award-winning actor Tim Flavin in WAG! The Musical at the Charing Cross Theatre.
The tongue-in-cheek comedy, which enjoyed a successful run at Ye Olde Rose and Crown in Walthamstow last year, has now secured a six-week run in the West End starting July 18. Cundy, a familiar face from nearly a decade as a TV presenter, hopes the production will offer a different perspective on WAGs.
Speaking about the show, Cundy said: 'In the 2006 World Cup I was asked by This Morning to go and cover the WAGs. Whether people liked it or not, they became the real stars of the World Cup and people became fascinated by them. It’s a lifestyle young girls aspire to and many are attracted by the glitz and the glamour.'
She added: 'I think people think we’re always having our nails done or are out shopping and it’s the life of Riley. It isn’t like that for many of us. Many have their own careers, and I’ve always loved working.'
Cundy, who trained at Central Drama School but married young and had a child at 24, was encouraged to take the role by her friend Lord Lloyd Webber. The musical, produced by Peter Frosdick and Paul Nicholas, also stars real-life WAG Pippa Fulton, who is engaged to Brentford striker Clayton Donaldson. The story follows two working-class girls on a cosmetics counter at an upmarket department store.
