BBC comedian Luisa Omielan has disclosed that she has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and post-concussion syndrome following a brain injury sustained in a Lime bike accident. The 43-year-old stand-up star, known for her Edinburgh Fringe show What Would Beyoncé Do?!, was rushed to A&E three times after the incident.
Details of the Accident and Diagnosis
Last month, Omielan revealed she accidentally rode a Lime bike into a brick wall, breaking her nose. In a new Instagram video featuring her Bernese Mountain dog Bernie, she admitted the accident ‘knocked her sideways’. She stated: ‘Everything is going to be fine, but I have had a minor brain injury and have been diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome and PTSD.’
Omielan also mentioned that Bernie is experiencing health issues ‘because we are twins and do everything together’. She praised her dog as ‘an absolute trooper’ and expressed gratitude for her support.
Impact on Career and Recovery
The comedian, who adapted her Edinburgh show Politics for Bitches for the BBC, said the past few weeks have been ‘incredibly challenging’ but that there is ‘a clear path forward’. She emphasised focusing on recovery and credited her sister for ‘gently pushing me through exposure therapy and encouraging me to try things again, one step at a time.’
Omielan is stepping back from live performances, having cancelled upcoming gigs. She noted: ‘A huge shout-out to the kindness of strangers. With everything that’s happened over the last four weeks, every time I’ve needed help, someone has stepped in. It has genuinely restored my faith in people. If you ever wonder whether to offer someone a hand, I’d always rather someone ask than walk past.’
Financial Support and Fan Message
Unable to work, Omielan directed fans to her Patreon, stating: ‘It is my only income until I’m well enough to plan and deliver shows. I am so grateful to my gang for helping me through this time.’ She apologised to fans and venues affected by the cancellations, concluding: ‘I am gutted and want to come back ASAP.’
Understanding Post-Concussion Syndrome
Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) is a set of symptoms experienced after a concussion, including persistent headaches, dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light or noise, depression, anxiety, fatigue, and forgetfulness. PCS does not show on scans or blood tests; diagnosis relies on medical history and symptoms. There is no specific treatment, but avoiding late nights and prolonged screen time can help.
