A recent survey of 2,000 adults has revealed the top 30 nostalgic dishes still prepared in UK homes, including liver and onions, bread and butter pudding, and Welsh rarebit. Most home cooks said these recipes have been handed down through generations, highlighting their continued importance at family meal times.
To celebrate these traditional dishes, children's TV icon Angellica Bell partnered with Red Tractor for an intergenerational cooking showdown. The Celebrity MasterChef champion and former CBBC host brought together three families to recreate their favourite nostalgic recipes and discuss their significance.
The menu included spaghetti and meatballs, rhubarb crumble, and Chinese-style chicken noodle dish. The cook-along was organised to mark Red Tractor's 25th anniversary, celebrating British farmers and growers who maintain high standards for food safety and traceability.
Angellica Bell said: 'I have great memories of cooking with my grandmother when I was a little girl and that's why I believe spending quality time with loved ones in the kitchen is precious.' She added that creating recipes with safe, traceable British ingredients was a perfect way to remind people of their importance.
The research also found that 68 per cent of adults are actively preserving traditional recipes by cooking them at family gatherings, writing them down, and teaching their children. 87 per cent agreed that preserving traditional British recipes is crucial, with 35 per cent cooking classic dishes several times a week.
Richard Cattell, spokesperson for Red Tractor, said: 'It's heartwarming to see that so many families are keeping our nation's favourite classic dishes alive by sharing recipes through the generations and creating lasting memories together in the kitchen.'
