Mum Claims Family Butchers Common Baby Name Norah on Purpose
Mum Says Family Butchers Daughter's Name Norah on Purpose

A mother has taken to social media to express her frustration after claiming her family members are deliberately mispronouncing and misspelling her daughter's name, despite it being a common choice. The mum, who shared her story on Reddit, named her three-month-old daughter Norah, but says relatives consistently get it wrong.

A Common Name, But Constant Errors

The mother explained that while she understands the more traditional spelling drops the 'H' at the end, she does not believe the name is particularly difficult to pronounce or spell. She wrote: 'My family cannot get my baby's name right. Is the name that difficult, or are they just crazy?'

She detailed how her own father and other family members only spell it as 'Nora', even after multiple corrections. Even more frustrating, her grandmother keeps calling the baby 'Noah', commenting that 'Noah is a boy's name'. The mum pointed out that she knows girls named Noah, but that is not her daughter's name.

Passive-Aggressive Behaviour?

The mother is convinced the errors are intentional, as they have been corrected numerous times over the three months since the baby's birth. She worries that her choice might be more unusual than she thought, but noted that singer Norah Jones uses the same spelling. 'I feel like the H has just confused everybody, but it seems so normal to my husband and to me,' she added.

Commenters on Reddit were largely supportive, with many stating that Norah is a well-known variant. One person said: 'While the spelling Nora comes to my mind first, I still would pronounce Norah the same way and would know the name.' Another added: 'This is a them issue. Norah is a perfect name and spelling.'

Some questioned whether the family was being passive-aggressive about the name. The mum admitted she hopes that is not the case but cannot rule it out, adding: 'I think the Nora spelling is more like a lack of care or attention to detail.'
