Rafael Nadal has reignited one of tennis’s most enduring debates by omitting Roger Federer from his personal list of the 10 greatest athletes of all time, instead including his other long-time rival, Novak Djokovic. The 40-year-old Spaniard was asked by Netflix Sports to compile his top 10, and his choices have sparked fresh discussion over who truly deserves the title of greatest men’s tennis player.
Nadal’s Top 10 List
Speaking to Netflix Sports, Nadal named: “Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Novak Djokovic, Muhammad Ali, Michael Schumacher, Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, [Diego] Maradona, Pele.” The list features icons from multiple sports, but notably excludes Federer, with whom Nadal shared one of the most famous rivalries in sporting history.
The Federer-Nadal Rivalry
Federer and Nadal produced what many consider the greatest tennis match of all time during the 2008 Wimbledon final, which Nadal won in a rain-disrupted five-set epic, ending Federer’s run of five consecutive titles at SW19. That match, which extended into near darkness, cemented their rivalry as legendary. Now, Nadal appears to have gotten one over his old rival again by snubbing him from his list.
The Big Three’s Legacy
Between them, Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal have amassed a staggering 66 Grand Slam titles, earned more than £350 million in prize money, and spent a combined 947 weeks ranked world No. 1. Federer was the trailblazer, winning his first Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 2003 and becoming the first man to surpass Pete Sampras’s record of 14 major titles. He retired in 2022, but many of his records have since been overtaken by his rivals.
Djokovic now leads the men’s game with 24 Grand Slam titles, followed by Nadal with 22 and Federer with 20. Djokovic has also won Olympic gold, claimed a record 40 Masters crowns, and remains the only player to complete a Triple Career Grand Slam. Unlike Federer and Nadal, who retired in 2022 and 2024 respectively, Djokovic is still competing at the highest level and is chasing a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.
Reactions and Implications
Nadal’s selection is likely to reignite the never-ending debate over who deserves the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) title in men’s tennis. Fans and analysts have long debated the merits of each player, with Federer’s elegance and longevity, Nadal’s dominance on clay, and Djokovic’s all-round excellence and record-breaking achievements all cited as arguments. By choosing Djokovic over Federer, Nadal has added a new chapter to that discussion. The list also highlights Nadal’s respect for Djokovic’s achievements, even as the Serb continues to extend his lead in Grand Slam titles.
