Olivia Rodrigo has criticised the online backlash to her recent babydoll-style outfits, saying the reaction 'shows how we really normalise paedophilia in our culture.'
Singer Addresses Controversy on Podcast
The 23-year-old singer addressed the controversy on The New York Times' podcast Popcast, after weeks of debate surrounding her attire while promoting her forthcoming album. Rodrigo highlighted the hypocrisy of criticism for being fully covered in a 'childlike' dress, compared to her previous 'revealing' outfits that were not deemed inappropriate.
Backlash Over Music Video Styling
The backlash primarily focused on her styling in the 'Drop Dead' music video, where she wore a pastel-blue babydoll dress with visible bloomers and white knee socks. Members of the public have since taken to social media to criticise the singer, accusing her of adopting a 'sexy baby' aesthetic.
In her full remarks on the podcast, Rodrigo condemned the 'disturbing' reaction, arguing that it reflects a broader societal issue. She stated that the criticism reveals how people sexualise childlike imagery and then blame the wearer rather than addressing the underlying problem.
