In an exclusive interview, royal expert Jennie Bond has revealed that Princess Charlotte is being given the freedom to choose her own future path, as the young royal approaches her teenage years. The Princess of Wales, Kate, is said to be guiding her daughter with a unique understanding of the bond between mother and daughter.
A Growing Bond
The special connection between Princess Charlotte and her mother has been evident in recent public appearances. From a piano duet at Kate's Christmas carol concert to holding hands after the Easter Sunday service at Windsor Castle, the pair have displayed a close relationship. A recent portrait released for Charlotte's 11th birthday showed her with long brown hair, resembling her mother, as she enjoyed time in nature.
Jennie Bond, former BBC royal correspondent, told the Mirror: "However much Catherine adores her two boys, there's something unique about the bond between a mother and daughter. Guiding a daughter through childhood into adolescence is a special privilege."
Shared Interests
Charlotte has inherited her mother's love for sports and the outdoors. The young princess enjoys gymnastics, athletics, tennis, and netball, and has recently taken up the 400m hurdles. The family's new home, Forest Lodge, features a tennis court where mother and daughter can play together. They also enjoy trampolining, which once led to Kate injuring her fingers.
Beyond sports, Charlotte is creative and loves crafting, with her projects scattered around the family home. Her father, Prince William, has shared that she enjoys making friendship bracelets, a trend inspired by Taylor Swift.
A New Era for the Monarchy
As the 'spare' to the throne, Charlotte's future is less certain than that of her older brother, Prince George. However, Bond believes her parents will allow her to explore different paths before deciding on a role as a working royal. "This is a new era, with a slimmed-down monarchy," Bond explained. "If Charlotte can't bear the thought of life as a working royal, I think her parents will find a way to let her forge a different path."
The Wales family has faced challenges, including Kate's cancer diagnosis, which she is now in remission from. Despite this, Charlotte has grown in confidence, charming crowds at public events like the Easter service and Christmas Day at Sandringham.
Growing Up Away from the Spotlight
Charlotte is largely growing up away from the public eye, attending Lambrook School and enjoying a relatively private life. Her parents have been praised for creating a stable home environment, which has contributed to her confidence. Bond noted: "William and Catherine have worked hard to give their children a happy and stable home life. Judging by the three children, they have done a good job."
As she grows older, Charlotte will continue to appear at selected royal engagements, but her parents are determined to shield her and allow her a normal upbringing. Bond concluded: "She will always be in the public eye, but life as a working royal seems the most likely future for her."
