Channel Nine's Today show presenter Sarah Abo has opened up about the private nature of her marriage, sharing the simple reason her husband, Cyrus Moran, consistently avoids the public eye.
A Deliberate Choice for Privacy
In a candid interview with Stellar magazine and the Something To Talk About podcast, the 40-year-old journalist explained that her spouse's low profile is a conscious choice, not an act of secrecy. "It's not as though he's hiding. It's just that he's not in the media," Sarah stated. She expressed bemusement that some people struggle to understand why her husband of 13 years has no desire for a career in the spotlight.
"For some reason that seems to be hard to understand for some people," she said. "It's like, 'No, mate. I've got a weird job and a weird life... he doesn't.'"
The Birthday Broadcast Dilemma
This commitment to privacy led to a notable moment when producers of the Today show hoped to include Cyrus in a special segment marking Sarah's 40th birthday. The plan involved a video link with her family in Melbourne and a request for Cyrus to appear on set to wish her a happy birthday live on air.
His response was unequivocal. "And he was like, 'Absolutely not,'" Sarah recalled. He sought her permission, asking, "'Are you gonna kill me if I don't come on the telly? I'm really sorry. Do you mind if I don't do it?'"
Sarah revealed that mutual support is a cornerstone of their relationship, and she told him she would respect his decision. "He said, 'I will if you really want me to, but I really don't want to.' I was like, 'I don't want you to do anything you’re not comfortable with.' It's just not who he is."
Life Away from the Cameras
Sarah Abo, who was born in Syria, married Cyrus Moran in 2012. Both are alumni of Monash University, where Cyrus completed a Bachelor of Arts in History in 2004, the same year Sarah began her journalism studies. Professionally, Cyrus works as a trader at a Victorian steel mill, facilitating international trade for Australian companies.
While fiercely protective of their private life, Sarah occasionally shares glimpses of their relationship on social media. In May 2023, she posted a sweet photo embracing Cyrus at his 40th birthday party, captioning it: "Happy birthday. Beautiful, blurry, you. #fortyandfine."
Sarah joined the Today show as co-host alongside Karl Stefanovic in November 2022, replacing Allison Langdon. At the time, she said she was "thrilled to be joining the wonderful and hard-working team at Today, who manage to inform the nation every morning while also having a lot of fun."
