The first trailer for the new film adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility has been released, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood and Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood. Directed by Georgia Oakley (Blue Jean), the film is produced by Working Title and the team behind the 2005 Pride & Prejudice, which became an awards darling and cultural phenomenon.
A Fresh Take on a Classic
The trailer opens with a rustic feel reminiscent of the 2005 Pride & Prejudice, showing Marianne's hand running through grass. It quickly establishes the close bond between the Dashwood sisters and their family's financial struggles after their father's death leaves them without inheritance due to their step-brother's selfishness.
The cast includes Caitríona Balfe as Mrs. Dashwood, Bodhi Rae Breathnach as youngest sister Margaret, and Fiona Shaw as Mrs. Jennings, who is determined to marry off the girls. George MacKay plays Edward Ferrars, the love interest of Elinor, and delivers a surprising saucy wink that adds a new dimension to the character.
Stellar Cast and Performances
MacKay's portrayal of Edward Ferrars is described as more intriguing and self-assured than previous versions, including Hugh Grant's performance in the 1995 film directed by Ang Lee. Frank Dillane plays the charming Mr. Willoughby, who rescues Marianne after a fall, while Norwegian actor Herbert Nordrum portrays the quiet Colonel Brandon. The trailer teases a physical confrontation between Brandon and Willoughby, hinting at their backstory from the novel.
Diana Reid's screenplay incorporates Austen's original dialogue, with the trailer ending on Marianne's line: 'I require so much.' The film is set for release in UK cinemas on September 25.
