His longtime producing partners, Eric Kopeloff and Philip Schulz-Deyle, confirmed that Borman died of natural causes. In a statement to Deadline, they described him as one of the most accomplished independent producers of his generation.

Borman's career stretched more than 40 years, during which he produced over 25 feature films. He frequently collaborated with director Oliver Stone on projects such as Alexander, World Trade Center, W., Savages, and Snowden.

His other notable credits include Under the Volcano, The Quiet American, Mindhunters, K-19: The Widowmaker, Basic Instinct 2, Where the Money Is, Up at the Villa, and Nurse Betty, which starred Renée Zellweger, Morgan Freeman, Chris Rock, and Greg Kinnear and premiered at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.

Kopeloff and Schulz-Deyle praised Borman's generosity and passion for cinema. They said: 'It is with profound sadness that we announce his passing. Moritz was one of the most accomplished and respected independent producers of his generation. He helped shape the landscape of independent filmmaking, building creative and financial bridges between Europe and Hollywood.'

At the time of his death, Borman was working on John Lee Hancock's untitled Monsanto movie for Netflix. His partners vowed to continue the film 'in the spirit of excellence and dedication that characterised his career, honouring the vision he worked so relentlessly to achieve.'

Borman's legacy endures through the films he made and the filmmakers he inspired. He is survived by his family and countless colleagues around the world.
