Two notorious Scottish gangsters have been shot dead in a crowded Irish bar in Fuengirola, Spain, on Saturday night. The victims have been identified as Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jnr, both linked to organised crime in Scotland.
A masked gunman opened fire near the entrance of Monaghans Fuengirola, a bar owned by Monaghan, around 11.30pm. One victim died instantly from a chest wound; the other, hit in the chest and abdomen, was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts to revive him.
Witnesses described hearing what they thought were fireworks before realising it was gunfire. One local told Malaga Hoy: 'I thought they were going to kill me too.' Another said: 'I looked out and saw a man pointing at something and shooting. I was in shock.'
Spanish police have set up roadblocks and mobilised a specialist violent crime unit. No arrests have been made. The Foreign Office said it had not been approached for consular assistance but stood ready to help British nationals.
The killings are the latest in a series of violent incidents on the Costa del Sol, linked to a gangland feud that has raged across Scotland's Central Belt since March. Monaghan was previously acquitted of the 2010 murder of Glasgow gangster Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll.
