Vogue Williams' Initial Rejection of Spencer Matthews Before Injury
Vogue Williams rejected Spencer Matthews before injury

Irish presenter Vogue Williams has shared surprising details about the beginning of her relationship with husband Spencer Matthews, including how she initially rejected his advances before a worrying premonition about injury came true.

The Initial Rejection

Vogue Williams politely declined Spencer Matthews' first attempts to ask her out when they met in 2017 while preparing for Channel 4's winter sports competition The Jump. This encounter came shortly after her separation from Westlife singer Brian McFadden.

In her memoir Big Mouth, Vogue explains that despite the former Made In Chelsea star's persistence, she wasn't interested in dating at first. "As soon as we left our first ski session, Spencer was DMing me on Twitter suggesting we go for drinks, which I wasn't up for, but he settled for getting my number," she recalled.

Spencer's Determined Pursuit

Spencer Matthews proved he wasn't one to give up easily. Shortly after their initial meeting, he telephoned Vogue and invited her to join him and his friends for an evening out. Staying true to her instincts, Vogue once again turned him down, questioning whether combining romance with their demanding filming schedule was sensible.

"Not long after, he rang and asked me to go out with him and his friends, but I politely declined," Vogue revealed. "It wasn't until we flew to Austria that we saw each other again."

She described this moment as pivotal for their relationship, noting that despite neither wanting a serious commitment initially, they kept finding themselves together. When her sister visited during filming, Vogue attempted to deny the relationship, but the arrangement of room sharing made the truth obvious.

The Devastating Injury

Just as filming was about to begin, Vogue suffered a serious knee injury during ski cross training that forced her withdrawal from the competition. The damage to her anterior cruciate ligament required surgery, with model Amy Willerton stepping in as her replacement.

Vogue admitted she had experienced a sense of foreboding before the accident. "When I signed, I had a feeling something might happen to me because I had got away with very little bodily damage up to that point in my life and it felt like my turn," she explained.

Despite the devastation of missing the competition, Vogue found some consolation in having participated in all events during training.

From Rejection to Lasting Love

Those initial meetings on The Jump sparked a romance that has continued to flourish. Spencer Matthews proposed to Vogue Williams in January 2018, and the couple married that same June.

The pair have since built a family together, becoming parents to three children: Theodore, Gigi, and Otto. Both have been open about balancing their high-profile careers with raising a young family in the public eye, proving that sometimes initial rejections can lead to lasting partnerships.
