EastEnders enthusiasts were taken aback when they recognised a familiar face from the BBC soap in a high-profile series on Prime Video. The show in question, Citadel, recently launched its third season, featuring a star-studded cast including Priyanka Chopra, Stanley Tucci, Richard Madden, and Lesley Manville.
A Surprise Appearance in Citadel
During the third episode of the new season, viewers noticed that the lead police officer attempting to arrest Chopra's character, Nadia, and her colleagues was none other than James Alexandrou, best known for his long-running role as Martin Fowler on EastEnders. A fan on Reddit shared a screenshot of the tense standoff, highlighting Alexandrou's commanding presence as he shouted at the characters to drop their weapons.
James Alexandrou's Career Journey
James, now 41, first gained fame as Martin Fowler on EastEnders, a role he played from 1996 to 2007. After leaving the soap, he presented BBC Three's Bizarre Crime and made cameo appearances in shows like Silent Witness and Call the Midwife. His role in Citadel marks a significant addition to his acting portfolio.
Fans reacted with nostalgia to his appearance, with one commenting, "Loving the nostalgia," and another adding, "He was definitely the best Martin." Alexandrou left EastEnders in 2007 when his character travelled with Sonia after the death of his mother, Pauline Fowler. At the time, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity and hinted at a possible return.
Remembering Martin Fowler
Last year, EastEnders fans witnessed Martin Fowler's tragic death during the show's 40th-anniversary episode. Alexandrou took to social media with a cheeky remark, writing, "Somehow reckon I’ll still be asked 'When are you going back to EastEnders?'" James Bye, who later took over the role, also bid an emotional farewell, stating, "It's an honour to leave on a story of this magnitude. RIP Martin Fowler."
Citadel is currently available to stream on Prime Video, offering viewers a chance to see Alexandrou in a thrilling new light.
