Midsomer Murders enthusiasts are in for a treat as beloved detective Charlie Nelson, played by Gwilym Lee, makes a return to screens a decade after his departure. The actor originally left the iconic ITV drama in 2016, but today (Sunday, May 17), viewers can enjoy vintage episodes featuring his character alongside Detective John Barnaby, portrayed by Neil Dudgeon.
Classic Episodes Airing Today
The nostalgic lineup begins at 2.25pm on ITV3 with a series 16 instalment titled The Flying Club. The episode synopsis reveals: "Barnaby and Nelson discover that the exciting world of stunt pilots and military heroes hides many dark secrets after the owner of Finchmere Airfield is hit on the head and dropped to his death from a plane. Are anti-aircraft campaigners behind Bernard King's murder, or is the incident linked to a tragic Second World War mission?"
Following this, another series 16 episode, The Killings of Copenhagen, will air. The overview states: "The murder of Midsomer resident and biscuit factory boss Eric Calder leads Barnaby and Nelson to Copenhagen. The pair join forces with local detectives Birgitte Poulsen and Anna Degn in the hunt for the killer, and during the course of their investigation, they discover the businessman had numerous links to the capital."
Later, viewers can look forward to the series 17 premiere, The Dagger Club, which continues the detective duo's adventures.
Behind the Scenes
Neil Dudgeon has worked with several partners over the years, including Jason Hughes, who was succeeded by Gwilym Lee, and Nick Hendrix, who joined as DS Jamie Winter after Lee's exit. Although Gwilym never publicly discussed his reasons for leaving, a source reportedly told the Daily Mail at the time that he departed to explore other acting opportunities. DS Nelson made his final appearance in episode six of season 18, and in the first episode of season 19, it was revealed that he had relocated from Midsomer to undertake an undercover course.
Fans can catch these classic episodes starting at 2.25pm on ITV3.
