Romesh Ranganathan's Awkward School Reunion on Michael McIntyre's Big Show
Romesh Ranganathan's Awkward Reunion on TV

Comedian and presenter Romesh Ranganathan was left visibly stunned and embarrassed during a recent episode of Michael McIntyre's Big Show, when he was unexpectedly reunited with a former school crush.

The 'Remember Me?' Segment Delivers Cringe

In the popular BBC programme's signature 'Remember Me?' segment, which specialises in surprising celebrity guests with figures from their past, host Michael McIntyre, 49, brought out a mystery female guest. A bewildered Romesh, 47, initially fell into a stunned silence as she asked, 'Romesh, remember me?'

After a hesitant 'Yes, I think I do,' the Parents Evening host put his head in his hands, declaring the situation 'so bad' to waves of audience laughter. McIntyre offered a clue by displaying the word 'field' on the big screen, which Romesh quickly attributed to playing cricket together at school.

Unearthing a Teenage Romance

When pressed for her name, Romesh recalled it was Sonya. The pair confirmed they had last seen each other at age 16. The host then escalated the reveal by showing the word 'SNOG' on screen, followed by a school photograph of the two cuddled up together, much to the surprise of both Romesh and his guest.

Sonya explained they were in maths class together and shared a moment at a fifth-year leavers' party. 'There was probably some flirting, mild flirting... He went for the kiss,' she said. Romesh elaborated, recalling he suggested a walk in the woods where he 'made my move.' The resulting relationship, he confessed, lasted 'in theory, we were going out... for a week.'

In a brutally honest moment, Romesh asked Sonya if she ever thinks about him, to which she simply replied, 'No.'

A Pause from the Spotlight

This light-hearted television moment comes after Romesh Ranganathan revealed he is taking a deliberate step back from his hectic showbiz schedule. Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs with Lauren Laverne, the star of the BAFTA-winning Rob & Romesh Vs said he has no grand plan but is 'taking a breather' to spend more time at home.

Michael McIntyre's Big Show continues to air on Saturday nights at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
