Netflix is currently hosting a profoundly moving documentary that has been described as a 'must-watch' and 'one of the saddest stories ever' by viewers. The film, titled Avicii: I'm Tim, offers an intimate and heartbreaking portrait of the late Swedish DJ and producer, Tim Bergling.
The Rise and Fall of a Superstar
The documentary charts Bergling's incredible journey from a Stockholm-born music enthusiast to a global EDM sensation who dominated the 2010s. It highlights his creation of era-defining anthems like 'Wake Me Up' and 'Levels', which propelled him to international stardom. However, Avicii: I'm Tim does not shy away from the darker side of his fame.
It delves into the severe health issues and substance abuse struggles he faced away from the spotlight, pressures that were exacerbated by a relentless touring schedule. The film is narrated from Avicii's own perspective and features previously unseen personal material, as well as conversations with close collaborators, including Coldplay's frontman, Chris Martin.
A Powerful Audience Reaction
Since its release on Netflix in December 2024, the documentary has resonated deeply with audiences, quickly climbing the platform's viewing charts. On social media, fans have been urging others to experience the film.
One viewer on X (formerly Twitter) declared it 'absolutely incredible', while another simply stated, 'Avicii doc on Netflix... A must-watch.' Many have been struck by its emotional depth, with one comment reading, 'Avicii's documentary on Netflix is one of the saddest stories I have ever watched.'
The sentiment was echoed on Reddit, where users praised the documentary's construction. One fan reflected, 'Sad that Tim just wanted to make music and the success of his music became too much for him.'
Accompanied by a Final Farewell
Netflix released the documentary alongside a concert special, Avicii: My Last Show. This film captures his final live performance at the Ushuaïa Hotel in Ibiza on 28 August 2016. Although he retired from touring after this gig, Bergling continued to produce music for another two years before his tragic death by suicide in April 2018.
The pairing of the introspective documentary with his final, energetic performance creates a poignant and 'bittersweet' viewing experience that celebrates his genius while mourning his loss.
Both Avicii: I'm Tim and Avicii: My Last Show are available to stream on Netflix.
