Fashion Icons Through the Ages: From Princess Diana to Modern Trends
New research commissioned by Dove has unveiled the ultimate fashion icons that women believe have stood the test of time, with Princess Diana's off-the-shoulder "revenge dress" leading the pack. According to the Enduring Icons index, 54% of women today still resonate with this iconic piece, showcasing its lasting impact decades after it first made headlines.
Timeless Staples and Evolving Classics
The study highlights a fascinating evolution in what constitutes a fashion classic. While Diana's dress remains a powerful symbol, other perennial favourites include the little black dress, which 66% of women say will never go out of style. Denim jackets and crisp white shirts also rank highly, chosen by 45% and 39% of respondents respectively.
Additional staples that have secured their place in fashion history include leather biker jackets, tailored blazers, and knee-high leather boots, each selected by around a third of women surveyed. These items reflect a blend of practicality and elegance that continues to appeal across generations.
Generational Divides in Style Preferences
The research uncovers a clear generational split in fashion tastes. Gen Z women are driving a resurgence of nineties nostalgia, with a strong preference for low-rise denim and crop tops. In contrast, older generations tend to favour more formal styles, such as pearls and structured outfits, indicating a shift in what different age groups consider iconic.
This divide underscores how cultural moments and nostalgia influence fashion trends, with younger women embracing retro looks while their elders cling to traditional elegance.
Dove's Inspiration from Lasting Design
Inspired by the concept of enduring design, Dove has launched a new refillable antiperspirant, positioning it as a modern everyday essential. Jenny Blanco Barcia, marketing manager for Dove, commented on the findings, stating that true icons are defined by their ability to stand the test of time, blending design, desirability, and longevity.
She emphasised that women are increasingly drawn to items that feel considered, elevated, and worth holding onto, whether in their wardrobes or daily routines. The refillable antiperspirant features stylish cases in various colours, offering up to 72-hour protection, skincare ingredients, and fine fragrance-inspired scents, designed to be kept and reused.
This initiative reflects a broader trend towards sustainability and thoughtful consumption in the fashion and beauty industries, aligning with the study's insights into lasting appeal.
