Gracie Abrams and Paul Mescal Collaborate on New Track

Singer Gracie Abrams has confirmed that she co-wrote a song with her boyfriend, Normal People star Paul Mescal, for her forthcoming third studio album. The 26-year-old artist, known for hits like That's So True and Close To You, revealed that the track titled Imaginary Friend was penned alongside the 30-year-old Irish actor. The album, named Daughter From Hell, is set for release in July, following her number one 2024 record, The Story Of Us.

The Writing Process and Privacy Concerns

Abrams described the collaboration as a natural and enjoyable experience, stating that it was not a groundbreaking event for the couple but rather a fun activity to share. However, she acknowledged that this creative partnership might invite increased scrutiny into her personal life, which she has traditionally kept separate from her music. Speaking on the New York Times podcast Popcast, she explained, "We have a very creative home with friends who are so good at what they do, and everyone feels happy to share that with one another."

When asked about potential criticism, Abrams emphasized her balanced approach to privacy: "I don't like the feeling of hiding. I also love privacy where it feels like the right thing. I always like to assume the absolute worst case scenario of everything, and then anything else is like pleasant." She added that the joy and learning derived from the experience outweigh any negative reactions, noting, "I also think if you know how happy your experience was making something, or how much you learned about yourself or your partner, no amount of hate or trolling could take that away."

Addressing the 'Nepo Baby' Label

Abrams, the daughter of Star Wars filmmaker JJ Abrams and producer Katie McGrath, also addressed the term 'nepo baby' in the interview. She acknowledged its appropriateness, citing the privilege of growing up with a financial safety net that allowed her to pursue music without fear. "I think about the privilege there and it's like, I had a safety net and that allowed me the ability to experiment and to concentrate and I had the gift of time to dedicate to doing this thing I loved. I wasn't growing up afraid financially and that's the biggest deal."

She further reflected on the household vocabulary she was lucky to inherit, saying, "When I see people pointing that out, it's like, I get it hardcore." Despite online criticism, Abrams feels supported during live performances and among friends, expressing concern for those who engage in online cruelty. "I'm fascinated these days, there's just abject cruelty floating. And I think when people decide to kind of cash in on that, I worry for their hearts."

Upcoming Album and Tour

Daughter From Hell is highly anticipated following the success of The Story Of Us, which topped charts in 2024. The album's lead single, Imaginary Friend, co-written with Mescal, marks the couple's first musical collaboration. Abrams continues to tour, with recent performances at festivals including Glastonbury in Somerset.
