Channel 4's Virgin Island Season 2 Sees More Sex and Two Couples Form
Virgin Island Season 2: More Sex, Two Couples Form

Channel 4's Virgin Island has returned for a second series, and this time around there is significantly more sexual activity among the participants, with two couples forming during the three-week filming period. In the debut series last year, only one of the 12 contributors engaged in sexual intercourse, and that occurred with a professional surrogate partner in the final episode. However, the new cast, described as more confident, quickly began forming intimate connections with each other.

A Bolder and More Confident Cast

The BAFTA-nominated series, which became the most streamed show in Channel 4's history among 16-34 year olds, attracting 9 million downloads, returns with a fresh group of 12 adult virgins. The new contributors include Joy, 22, a devout Christian raised in a purity culture who struggles with deep shame and a condition preventing sex; Katie, 22, scarred by being voted the ugliest girl at school; Alex, 28, a private schoolboy with erectile dysfunction; and Ellen, 35, a lesbian who has never kissed anyone. Others include autistic Bertie, 24, with low self-esteem; Ed, 27, who fears his limb difference will be seen as weird; Callum, 21, a gaming recluse; Jason, 26, a painfully shy postman; Marianne, 26, whose body freezes at sexual prospects; Mille, 22, fearful of sex; Tegan, 25, a gay woman stuck in the friend zone; and Will, 30, who suffers from premature ejaculation.

New Relationships and Supportive Cast

An insider revealed that four cast members formed two couples during filming, and rather than feeling intimidated, the rest of the group cheered them on. Executive producer Tom Garland expressed delight at the romantic developments, stating it was a by-product of the supportive environment created on the island. He noted that the cast's guards came down more quickly this time, leading to magical moments.

Expanding the Program: Kink Expert and More

This year, the show introduces a kink expert, American coach Shelby Devlin, who specializes in helping participants explore their core desires. Garland explained that the aim was to make kinks more accessible and less intimidating. The setting remains a beautiful private island in Croatia, where participants undergo intimacy workshops and one-on-one sessions without access to phones or TV.

Expert Guidance and Participant Growth

Returning presenters Celeste Hirschmann and Danielle Harel, founders of the Somatica Institute, emphasized that this year's cast was less nervous because they had watched the previous series. Celeste noted that participants were encouraged to see each other as practice buddies, leading to more experimentation and romantic opportunities. The addition of BDSM expert Shelby Devlin allowed participants to explore power dynamics and sensations safely. Shelby, initially wary of reality TV's exploitative nature, found the British approach caring and respectful, hoping to inspire viewers to embrace their desires.

Impact and Success Stories

Last year's participants reported significant confidence boosts, with accountant Dave losing his virginity with a surrogate partner in the final episode, and dog-groomer Holly later announcing she had lost her virginity and is now six months pregnant with a partner. Another participant, Taylor, credited the show with transforming her life, advising new cast members to take risks. Garland noted that the production team was amazed by the progress made in just three weeks, with many happy tears but no early departures. The series airs on Channel 4 at 9pm on Monday, 27 April.
