Huw Edwards Takes Major Step Toward Public Statement on Child Images Scandal

Former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has taken a significant step in his post-conviction journey by hiring a prominent showbiz publicist to help manage his public image and potentially prepare for a future statement regarding his child pornography case. The 64-year-old broadcaster, who pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children, is reportedly considering speaking out publicly as questions linger about his actions.

Conviction and Sentencing Details

Edwards received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, after admitting three charges of making indecent images of children at Westminster Magistrates' Court in September 2024. The court heard disturbing details during proceedings, including evidence of sexual WhatsApp conversations between Edwards and another male, along with revelations that the father-of-five had been giving gifts and money to this individual.

New Representation and Career Rebuilding Efforts

The disgraced broadcaster has now enlisted Barry Tomes, a 70-year-old public relations expert with decades of industry experience representing music acts and reality television stars. Tomes, who previously worked with Benefits Street personality White Dee and mother-of-eight Marie Buchan (known as Octomum), confirmed he has taken Edwards on as a client despite anticipating significant backlash.

"I asked Huw if he intends to speak out in the long-term and he said yes," Tomes revealed to the Daily Mail. "There are no imminent plans to do anything. He's got a lot of rebuilding to do with his family and friends. All that takes time. His main focus at the moment is looking after his elderly mother. When he chooses to do something in the public eye, he has to be ready mentally."

Public Curiosity and Motivations

Tomes explained that public interest in understanding Edwards' motivations drives his decision to represent the former broadcaster. "A lot of the public wants to find out how someone ended up doing what he did," Tomes stated. "People want to know why he did it. People say, 'How did someone with such an amazing life come to do these things?' I don't have the answer to that, but I would like to find it out. I believe the public want to know that. That's what is driving me."

Personal Fallout and Retreat from Public Life

Following his sentencing, Edwards retreated from London to a quiet Welsh village where his elderly mother resides. The conviction also led to the dissolution of his 30-year marriage to Vicky Flind, who ended their relationship after police charged him with the offenses. Edwards had enjoyed a 40-year career with the BBC before his downfall, making his conviction particularly shocking to colleagues and viewers alike.

Television Drama and Public Backlash

Channel 5 has produced a two-part drama titled Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards, starring Martin Clunes as the disgraced broadcaster. The program premiered recently, though Edwards has reportedly expressed doubts about its accuracy, suggesting it is "hardly likely to convey the reality of what happened."

Tomes acknowledged he expects criticism for representing Edwards but remains undeterred. "I wasn't nervous when I started being a publicist for Huw. I've got quite broad shoulders," he said. "I'm 70, and I've got life experience. I've had experience of taking flak. Will my Facebook numbers go down? Yeah. But that's OK. Because I don't need people who judge me. Judge what I achieve, not what I do."

The publicist referenced previous controversies in his career, including accusations of promoting "poverty porn" during his work on Channel 4's Benefits Street documentary. "I have a mantra, which is: 'If someone is having a go at me, they're leaving someone else alone,'" Tomes concluded, indicating his readiness to face public scrutiny while assisting Edwards through this challenging period.
