Jen Shah Bonds with Elizabeth Holmes Over Prison 'Poop Duty'

Former Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Jen Shah has revealed surprising details about her time behind bars, including an unlikely bond formed with disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes over shared bathroom cleaning responsibilities.

High-Profile Inmates Forge Connection in Texas Prison

Jen Shah, 52, who was released in December from the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, opened up in a new interview with People magazine about her prison experiences. Shah was arrested in March 2021 for her involvement in a nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme that specifically targeted elderly victims. After initially maintaining her innocence, Shah ultimately pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in July 2022.

Elizabeth Holmes, 42, was convicted in January 2022 on four counts of fraud and conspiracy for misleading investors about her biotech company's blood testing technology capabilities, resulting in millions of dollars in losses. Both women were housed at the same Texas facility where Ghislaine Maxwell was also incarcerated.

The Unusual Bonding Experience

According to Shah, she developed a close friendship with Holmes during their time together, referring to her affectionately as "Lizzy." Shah explained that as high-profile inmates, they naturally gravitated toward each other due to shared experiences and challenges.

"When you come through, I guess as a high-profile, too, there are just certain things where you both are dealing with, and so you naturally kind of come together in those instances," Shah told People.

The most memorable bonding experience came when both women were assigned what prisoners colloquially refer to as "poop duty" - bathroom monitoring and cleaning responsibilities.

Understanding Prison Bathroom Protocol

Shah detailed the prison's strict bathroom maintenance system during her interview. Inmates shared bathroom facilities, and if someone failed to clean up properly after use, the entire bathroom unit would receive a strike. After accumulating three strikes, inmates were required to perform poop duty as a penalty.

"Well, if someone in your bathroom does not clean it or something like that, you get a strike," Shah explained. "If your bathroom gets three strikes, you have to do poop duty."

Shah noted she narrowly avoided the duty until her bathroom unit reached the three-strike threshold, forcing her to take on the unpleasant task alongside Holmes.

The Reality of Poop Duty

The former reality star described the poop duty experience in vivid detail. Inmates assigned to this task had to sit in the bathroom on a metal chair for one-hour shifts, monitoring everyone who used the facilities.

"You have to go sit in the bathroom, pull a metal chair in there, and sit in the bathroom for an hour and watch everybody come in and use the bathroom," Shah recounted. "And then when they use the bathroom, you have to get up, go inspect the bathroom, either clean it if they don't clean it or let them know to come and clean it."

She emphasized the unpleasant nature of the assignment, noting "you're literally sitting there in the bathroom. So, if you can imagine, you know, the smells and everything going on for poop duty. And if you get more strikes, you keep doing hours of poop duty."

Beyond Bathroom Bonds

While their shared bathroom monitoring duties created an initial connection, Shah revealed that she and Holmes developed their friendship further through outdoor walks and conversations about missing their families and discussing prison-related legislation.

The two women were housed in the same unit for the final ten months of Shah's incarceration, sharing not just bathroom facilities but also the experience of being high-profile inmates navigating the federal prison system.

Shah's candid revelations provide a rare glimpse into the daily realities of prison life for celebrity inmates and the unexpected relationships that can form under challenging circumstances.
