Justin Timberlake Arrest Footage Released After Legal Battle
Newly released video footage of Justin Timberlake's 2024 drink-driving arrest has been made public for the first time, revealing detailed interactions with police officers. The 45-year-old singing superstar was taken into custody by law enforcement in Sag Harbor, New York, for driving while intoxicated, and the footage shows him complaining about his treatment during the booking process.
Traffic Stop and Sobriety Test Captured on Camera
Fresh footage depicts a slurring Justin Timberlake being pulled over by police after officers observed him veering off to the left and failing to stop at stop signs. In the video, an officer explains the reason for the stop, to which Timberlake replies, "Yeah, sorry about that." He then explains that the car is a rental for his world tour and fumbles for the registration documents.
The 10-time Grammy winner appeared unsteady on his feet as he exited his vehicle and underwent a sobriety test, where he was asked to walk in a straight line. He is seen stumbling and exhibiting slowed speech before being placed in the back of a police car for transport to the station.
Police Station Interactions Revealed in Bodycam Footage
Bodycam footage obtained by CBS News shows what happened at the police station after Timberlake's arrest. The singer was informed by an officer why he was in handcuffs and was asked if he consented to a chemical test, which he refused. Timberlake then questioned the officer, saying, "What was the traffic violation I missed, just for future reference?"
He later complained, "You boys are treating me like a criminal." The officer responded, "I don't want to call anyone names, but this is the situation we're in Mr Timberlake I'm afraid. I'm trying my best to treat you like anybody else." Timberlake stared at the officer and asked, "Can I ask you a question, is this the normal process? Do you normally cuff people up?" After being told all DWI arrests are handled the same way, the singer said, "I appreciate you boys doing your job."
Legal Settlement Allows Release of Footage
The footage was released after Timberlake agreed to redactions as part of a legal settlement of a privacy lawsuit he had filed against the Sag Harbor Police Department. Earlier this month, he was granted a temporary restraining order to block the release of the video, following Freedom of Information Act requests. Legal papers filed in Sag Harbor claimed the footage shows the musician "in an acutely vulnerable state during a roadside encounter with law enforcement" and reveals "intimate details" of his "physical appearance, demeanour, speech, and conduct."
Lawyer Michael Del Piano argued that releasing the video would cause "severe and irreparable harm" to Timberlake's "personal and professional reputation" and subject him to "public ridicule and harassment." He stated there is "no legitimate public interest in understanding the operations of government" and that disclosure would constitute an "unwarranted invasion" of privacy.
Outcome of the Arrest and Charges
Justin Timberlake was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanour, but later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of driving while impaired, which is an infraction. At the police station, he was taken to a cell and told he would remain there until morning, to which he responded, "I have to stay here all night? You guys are wild, man." The release of this footage marks a significant moment in the ongoing public scrutiny of celebrity legal matters, highlighting tensions between privacy rights and public interest.
