Hollywood is in shock following the brutal murders of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and charged with the killings.
The Grisly Discovery and a Missing Son
On Sunday, December 14, 2025, at approximately 3:40 p.m., police officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's West Los Angeles Division responded to a call concerning a death investigation at a property on the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue in the affluent Brentwood neighbourhood. Upon entering the residence, they discovered the bodies of 78-year-old Rob Reiner and his 68-year-old wife, Michele. Reports indicate both victims had suffered fatal slash wounds to their throats.
The couple's daughter, Romy Reiner, is understood to have been the one who found her parents' bodies. Law enforcement sources state that she alerted officers to the fact that her 32-year-old brother, Nick, who had been living at the property recently, was not present. This led to an immediate search for the missing son, who was considered a suspect.
Arrest and Charges Filed
After being unaccounted for several hours, Nick Reiner was located and arrested by police at around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday. The LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division took over the investigation, swiftly determining the deaths were a homicide and that Nick Reiner was responsible.
He was formally booked for murder and is being held in custody with no bail, under booking number 7144668. A police statement confirmed the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office on Tuesday, December 16, for formal filing consideration.
Hollywood Mourns a Legendary Couple
The news has sent waves of grief through the entertainment community. Close friends of the Reiners, including actors Billy Crystal and Larry David, were seen arriving separately at the family home hours after the tragedy. A neighbour told local media that Crystal "looked like he was about to cry."
The couple's family and representatives released a heartfelt statement to Variety, expressing "profound sorrow" and describing an "unbelievably difficult time." They requested privacy as they process the sudden loss.
Rob and Michele Reiner married in 1989 after meeting on the set of the classic film When Harry Met Sally, which Rob directed. They are survived by their three children: Romy, Nick, and Jake. Rob Reiner was also father to an adopted daughter, Tracy, from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.
