US Influencer Ashly Robinson's Death in Zanzibar Sparks Suspicion and Questions
The death of US social media influencer Ashly Robinson, aged 31, has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a joyous vacation in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Known online as Ashlee Jenae, Robinson passed away on 9 April while holidaying with her boyfriend, Joe McCann, just days after celebrating her birthday and receiving a marriage proposal from him.
Unanswered Questions and Official Statements
Robinson's sudden demise has ignited widespread suspicion on social media, with many users expressing doubts about the current narrative. Despite no arrests being made and police initially stating that McCann was not suspected of wrongdoing, Zanzibar officials released a statement on Tuesday confirming that McCann's passport has been "withheld." This move has only deepened the mystery surrounding the case.
According to her family, Robinson was "found unconscious in her villa and taken to hospital, where her death was confirmed hours later." In a heartfelt statement issued on Sunday, they described the trip as supposed to be "one of the happiest of trips," but instead, they are grappling with overwhelming grief and unanswered questions. "Nothing about this loss feels real," the statement reads. "One moment she was celebrating love and life in truly Ashly fashion, and the next, she was gone. The suddenness, the unanswered questions, and the distance from home have made this tragedy even more overwhelming for our family."
Conflicting Reports and Family Concerns
The confusion escalated when Zanzibar police initially reported, via the local outlet Mwanachi, that Robinson had attempted to take her own life. Benedict Mapujira, the North Unguja police chief, claimed that a misunderstanding between the couple led hotel management to separate them into different rooms, though the hotel has not confirmed this account. As of Tuesday, local police maintain that McCann is not suspected of wrongdoing, with Mapujira stating, "We cannot take legal action or detain him under these circumstances."
Robinson's parents revealed to the BBC that they heard from McCann 11 hours after the incident believed to have led to her death, but he provided minimal detail and assured them she was okay. Later, the Zuri Zanzibar hotel, where they were staying, informed the family of her death. The hotel has stated it is cooperating with authorities and the US embassy. Additionally, the family told TMZ that McCann has not contacted them since the initial call, adding to their distress and the growing suspicion.
This tragic event has left a community of followers and loved ones seeking clarity, as investigations continue into the circumstances of Ashly Robinson's untimely death in Zanzibar.
