Strictly's Kai Widdrington lands Magic Radio Christmas shows after exit
Kai Widdrington gets Magic Radio Christmas gig

Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Kai Widdrington has swiftly bounced back from his shock elimination, securing a brand new presenting role on national radio. The 30-year-old, who was voted off the BBC dance contest with celebrity partner Vicky Pattison, will host two special Christmas shows on Magic Radio.

From Dance Floor to DJ Booth

Widdrington, who joined the Strictly professional lineup in 2021, visited Magic Radio earlier this year while partnered with Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison. The station was clearly impressed, offering him his own festive slots. "I’m thrilled to be sharing my music loves with Magic Radio listeners this Christmas!" Kai said. "I’ve been a massive fan of Magic for ages - it’s the station I put on when I need good vibes, good music, and that bit of sparkle."

He expressed his delight at the opportunity, especially during his favourite time of year. "Honestly, this is a dream come true for me. I love everything about it: the lights, the songs, the whole warm-fuzzy feeling of it all. So getting to share that Christmas magic with listeners feels like a real treat. I can’t wait!"

Strictly Soundtrack and Festive Classics

During his two shows, Widdrington will play a mix of his personal favourite tracks that he has danced to on Strictly Come Dancing. Listeners can also expect a festive playlist featuring classics from iconic artists. The line-up includes:

  • Elton John
  • Stevie Nicks
  • Wham!
  • The Spice Girls
  • The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl

The new gig comes just weeks after his and Vicky Pattison's elimination from Strictly. The pair narrowly missed out on a coveted place in Blackpool Week after a dance-off against EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal and her partner, Julian Caillon.

Reflecting on the Strictly Journey

Vicky and Kai performed a Jive to Sound of the Underground by Girls Aloud in the fateful dance-off, but all judges chose to save their competitors. Balvinder Sopal was later eliminated in the semi-final the following week.

Speaking to host Tess Daly after their exit, an emotional Vicky Pattison praised her professional partner. "I’m really honoured to have shared this experience with so many amazing people. Mostly with this fella right here," she said, gesturing to Kai. "You’ve been the best partner a girl can ask for. I’m so sorry I didn’t get you to Blackpool but I feel like I’ve won just by having you as my partner."

She also admitted her nerves played a part, telling judge Shirley Ballas, "you are right - and I will proper beat myself up over that." In a lighter moment, she added, "I’ve never danced before sober and here I am – sober as a judge!"

Appearing on the sister show It Takes Two, Vicky revealed she received a large picture of her and Kai performing their leaderboard-topping Tango from her best friend, podcast co-host Angela Scanlon, which moved her to tears. Kai reflected on the sudden exit, saying, "It was tough, because we weren't expecting it - we were hoping to get through. For us, it was a tough moment - as we weren't used to it."

Kai Widdrington's Magic Radio Christmas specials will air at 6pm on Sunday 21st December and 7pm on Thursday 24th December. Listeners can tune in via DAB radio, online, through the Rayo app, or by asking their smart speaker to ‘Play Magic Radio’.
