Mark Pougatch Accuses BBC of Hiding Truth About Exit

ITV presenter Mark Pougatch has accused the BBC of twisting the truth about his exit after leaving the broadcaster six years ago. The 58-year-old, who now fronts ITV's World Cup coverage, previously worked for BBC Radio 5 Live. In 2020, the BBC announced that Pougatch had 'decided to move on,' implying he resigned. However, Pougatch claims he was axed and expressed surprise that the BBC would hide the truth.

Speaking to The Times, Pougatch said: 'The BBC have decided they want to go in a different direction and that’s their prerogative. They decided it, not me. I don’t know why they put that statement out saying I have decided to move on.' He added that he did not want to fall out with Radio 5 Live, saying he has many happy memories.

A BBC spokesman responded: 'We have nothing to add.' Pougatch also tweeted: 'Just so we’re clear this was not my decision but on we go. Lots of love to BBC 5 Live.'

Former Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling expressed anger on social media, writing: 'Sad that his total professionalism will be replaced by someone who is considered to be more in touch with the youth of today, even if they know sod all about football or interviewing.'

Pougatch is now preparing to lead ITV's World Cup coverage alongside Laura Woods, broadcasting from Brooklyn. He said: 'Our studio is in Brooklyn with Lower Manhattan over my shoulder. It will look spectacular.'
