The Apprentice: Harry Clough Becomes Eleventh Candidate Fired by Lord Sugar
In Thursday's dramatic episode of BBC's The Apprentice, financial sales manager Harry Clough became the eleventh candidate to hear Lord Sugar's infamous phrase: "You're fired." The Battersea, London resident waved goodbye to the chance of securing a £250,000 investment and a business partnership with the renowned entrepreneur.
A Disastrous Start and a Second Chance
Viewers will recall that the series began with both teams being dispatched to Hong Kong for a classic scavenger hunt challenge. The task required finding specific items within a strict timeframe, but both teams performed poorly. Lord Sugar later revealed that a "heated exchange" was edited out of the premiere due to their "shocking" performance.
Consequently, the teams were given a second opportunity to prove themselves, this time on the Isle of Wight. Unfortunately for Kieran McCartney and his team, they lost this task, forcing McCartney to select two teammates to accompany him to the final boardroom confrontation.
The Costly Decision That Sealed Harry's Fate
McCartney, an estate agent, chose to bring back Harry Clough and Conor Galvin. Lord Sugar ultimately decided to fire Harry, citing the excessive cost of a stand-up paddle board he purchased during the task as the primary reason for his dismissal.
Reflecting on his elimination, Harry described the experience as "extraordinary" and "surreal." He admitted, "I kind of felt it coming because I was in the boardroom with Kieran and Conor, who are the biggest characters on the show. So, I thought I didn't stand a chance against those guys."
Despite his disappointment, Harry expressed pride in his journey, stating, "I was happy with how far I got, but I was definitely gutted to go." He defended his decision to buy the paddle board, arguing, "I think it was the right decision to buy it there and then. Obviously it was unlucky that the other team managed to get a second-hand one but that was sort of out of my control."
Controversy and Criticism
Harry also suggested that the wrong person was sent home, claiming, "I would say it was so close and I think it's so easy to blame a PM and put it on them. I was saying Kieran should have been fired when I was in the boardroom." He referenced a "lad's day out" involving wine tasting that contradicted McCartney's pricing strategy, though he acknowledged the team secured some good deals.
This firing follows recent controversy from the previous week, when candidate Rajan Gill launched an attack on Levi Hague after his own elimination. Gill argued that Hague should have been fired instead, claiming he "put himself out there" more than his rival. In that task, teams created virtual reality game demos to attract investment.
Gill's team, led by Lawrence Rosenburg, developed an aerobics game featuring giant frogs chasing the user but secured only £55,000 in investment. In contrast, the opposing team, which included Harry Clough and leveraged Karishma Vijay's gaming expertise, won with a futuristic running game that attracted £205,000.
Gill expressed respect for Lord Sugar's decision but insisted, "I don't think I deserve to be fired, to be honest." He highlighted his contributions as a sub-project manager and in corporate negotiations, while criticising Hague's consistency throughout the process.
The latest episode saw the ten remaining candidates attempting to redeem themselves after the disastrous Hong Kong scavenger hunt. The Apprentice continues to air on Thursdays at 9pm on BBC One and is available for streaming on iPlayer.
