David Haye's Controversial Camp Decision Sparks Outrage and Debate
The launch episode of I'm A Celebrity South Africa 2026 ignited immediate drama as former professional boxer David Haye left his co-star, Coronation Street icon Beverley Callard, seething with anger. The incident, which unfolded during the premiere on Monday night, has sharply divided the show's fanbase, with viewers taking to social media to express a mix of shock, sympathy, and tactical approval.
A Strategic Move That Backfired
Following a victorious challenge, David Haye was granted the power to send one member of the rival team to the basic camp, a harsh environment offering only rations and devoid of any luxuries. Despite audible reservations from fellow contestants and even hosts Ant and Dec, Haye opted to select the 69-year-old actress Beverley Callard for this Spartan fate.
Defending his controversial choice, Haye made a pointed jibe to the group, stating, "It's survival. We've got to eat." He further implied that Beverley was among the weaker campmates, expressing doubts about her potential performance in future battles and challenges. This tactical reasoning did little to placate Callard, who fired back with a warning: "You are going to pay for that decision."
Fan Reaction: A Spectrum of Opinions
The audience response was swift and polarized. Many viewers condemned Haye's selection, criticizing it as insensitive and unfair.
- One fan expressed disgust, writing: "God David sending an older woman for rice and beans is ew."
- Another questioned the logic: "Yes Bev is clearly fit for this programme but to pick her over a 30 year old is crazy work."
- Sentiments of sympathy were plentiful, with comments like "Noo poor Bev" and "Poor Bev! David isn't messing around but I do feel bad for Bev."
However, other fans were captivated by the early conflict, seeing it as classic reality television fodder.
- "Damn Beverly ain't happy lol," noted one viewer.
- Another observed: "Beverly and David already having a rivalry going on."
The Star-Studded South African Line-Up
This year's special edition features a roster of returning fan favourites and new faces. The confirmed cast includes Adam Thomas, Ashley Roberts, Scarlett Moffatt, David Haye, Beverley Callard, Seann Walsh, Sinitta, and Sir Mo Farah. They are joined by Gemma Collins, Craig Charles, Jimmy Bullard, and Harry Redknapp, completing a diverse and potentially volatile mix of personalities.
For Beverley Callard, this marks a return to the I'm A Celebrity franchise after her appearance in the Welsh version during the pandemic. She revealed her enthusiasm for the new challenge, stating: "I was really flattered when I got the call. In fact, I was gobsmacked! But I said ‘yes’ because Wales was so different. We didn’t get to experience the Australian jungle... To be part of the South Africa jungle is going to be a very different experience."
A Revamped Format for 2026
In response to previous fan feedback regarding a lack of viewer involvement, producers have implemented significant changes for the South Africa series. Unlike the last pre-recorded version, this season will culminate in a live final filmed in London on Friday, April 24th.
This three-week series promises heightened drama and unexpected twists, with the ultimate victory decided by public vote during the live episode. The inaugural series of this spin-off was won by Myleene Klass, who was crowned the champion and an official show Legend.
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! South Africa airs nightly at 9pm on ITV1 and the ITVX streaming platform.
