Hoda Kotb Returns to Today Show as Search for Savannah Guthrie's Mother Continues
Hoda Kotb Returns to Today Show Amid Nancy Guthrie Search

In a heartfelt display of solidarity, former Today show co-host Hoda Kotb made an emotional return to the NBC morning program on Friday. Her appearance came as the desperate search for Savannah Guthrie's 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, entered its sixth day following her disappearance over the weekend.

Emotional Reunion on Today Show

Despite officially departing the Today show in January, the 61-year-old journalist joined current hosts Craig Melvin, Carson Daly, and Sheinelle Jones during Friday's broadcast. Kotb immediately addressed the difficult circumstances surrounding her return, expressing her deep concern for the Guthrie family.

'First of all, I just want to say this whole thing's breaking my heart and I'm happy to be sitting here with you,' Kotb stated at the beginning of the segment. 'I think there's this helpless feeling. I mean, we're all so close to her and we all want to help her.'

Recalling Past Support

Kotb highlighted how Guthrie has consistently supported her Today show colleagues during their own personal crises. She began by referencing Guthrie's presence when Kotb's daughter Hope faced serious medical challenges with type 1 diabetes last year.

'I'm looking at us and I'm thinking, who was first in the hospital room when Hope was sick? Savannah,' Kotb recalled emotionally.

The veteran broadcaster then turned her attention to Carson Daly's experience, noting how Guthrie immediately traveled to be with him following the deaths of both his parents in 2017. Kotb continued by mentioning Sheinelle Jones's loss of her husband Uche Ojeh to cancer in 2025, and Craig Melvin's brother's passing in 2020, emphasizing that Guthrie provided crucial support during each tragedy.

Message of Hope and Prayer

Kotb concluded the emotional segment with a message of optimism and faith. 'I was thinking this morning, you know when they say, "Love is patient. Love is kind." We'll be patient and put prayers up,' she stated.

Craig Melvin echoed these sentiments, adding: 'It's just that feeling of helplessness. And we're not helpless because it's prayer and hope.'

Viewer Reactions

Audience members expressed overwhelming support for Kotb's return on social media platforms. Numerous comments on the Today show's official Instagram page praised her appearance during this challenging time.

'I think we all needed to see Hoda today,' one viewer commented. 'So much prayer for Momma Nancy to come home safely.'

Another wrote: 'I starting crying the moment I saw Hoda. She is a beacon of love and hope. We needed to see her and hear from her. It felt right to have her come home for Savannah and Nancy and the today show family.'

A third viewer added: 'So glad Hoda is back. This situation is very trying.' while a fourth noted: 'We all needed Hoda! She just has a way of making you feel hopeful when things are really hard. Please bring Nancy home.'

Investigation Developments

The search for Nancy Guthrie has revealed several concerning details about her disappearance. According to NBC National Law Enforcement & Intelligence Correspondent Tom Winter, Nancy's doorbell camera was disconnected at 1:47 AM on Sunday, which investigators consider a critical moment in the case.

Software data recorded movement at the Tucson, Arizona home at 2:12 AM, though police acknowledge this could have been caused by either a person or an animal. Unfortunately, Nancy did not maintain an active subscription with the doorbell application service, preventing the recovery of any potential footage.

At 2:28 AM, the application connected to Nancy's pacemaker became disconnected from her phone. Winter suggested this indicates she was separated from her phone before that time. The journalist raised questions about the twenty-minute gap between the camera disconnection and the detected motion.

'What's with that 20-minute time gap?' Winter questioned during Friday's Today show broadcast. 'The camera gets ripped off the doorbell, but then there's motion seen on the camera outside, you know, 20 minutes later. What's that about?'

Citing unnamed law enforcement sources, Winter revealed that investigators speculate the abductor may have removed the doorbell camera deliberately to test whether police would respond to the disruption.

'And then perhaps thinking the coast was clear, goes back to the house. We don't know,' he continued. 'We don't know the specifics of what camera detected the motion either.'

Family Appeals

On Wednesday evening, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings released a video message directly addressing their mother's captors, stating they were 'ready to talk.' The following day, Camron Guthrie made another emotional plea after the initial ransom deadline passed without contact from the abductors.

In a brief video posted to Savannah Guthrie's Instagram account on Thursday, Camron Guthrie solemnly stated: 'Whoever is out there holding our mother - we want to hear from you.' He noted that the family had not received any direct communication, as ransom notes demanding millions of dollars had only been sent to local news outlets and TMZ.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on Saturday night near her Tucson residence. She was reported missing after failing to attend church services on Sunday morning. The investigation continues as law enforcement officials and the Guthrie family maintain hope for her safe return.
