Married At First Sight's Luke Fourniotis Reveals 'Traumatic' PTSD After Show
Married At First Sight participant Luke Fourniotis has spoken candidly about what he describes as the 'traumatic' aftermath of his time on the popular reality television experiment. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail following his departure from the programme, the 30-year-old farmer disclosed that he believes he suffered 'a bit of PTSD' after being matched with his bride, Mel Akbay.
Emotional Isolation and Distress
Luke claimed he felt profoundly 'alone and isolated' from the very beginning of the experiment. He alleged that Mel 'checked out from the moment she saw' him and never genuinely allowed him to connect, even on a platonic friendship level. While he emphasised that he never wished for Mel to be 'told off' or publicly humiliated, Luke admitted the entire experience left him feeling 'beaten down' and struggling to trust those around him. He revealed he had to rely heavily on his sister and a close friend simply to endure the filming process.
'It was tough to watch,' Luke stated regarding reliving the season as it aired on television. 'I feel like I actually had like a bit of PTSD… I'd been in this experiment with Mel and just wasn't really treated nicely kind of thing.' He explained that the initial weeks were especially painful, as watching the broadcast reignited difficult memories. Luke noted that while the show can appear dramatic for viewers, the emotional weight of being thrust back into those moments is something for which one cannot adequately prepare.
Unconventional Casting and Intensive Process
Luke also shed light on his unconventional entry into the show, revealing he was scouted rather than applying through traditional means. 'Technically signed up… I didn't actually like, try out for it though,' he said. 'I got messaged by like a casting agent… she just sent me a message saying, "Oh, you look like you'd be good for the show."' From that point, he described an audition process that was both lengthy and intense, spanning approximately 'about a month and a half' and involving multiple stages.
He detailed that the process included comprehensive background checks and medical testing. 'There might've been like eight different stages… you had to do criminal tests, you had to do blood work… I think you had to do like STI tests from memory,' Luke recounted. The questioning was so thorough that he genuinely believed he would be matched with a compatible partner, as producers and experts seemed deeply interested in his values, morals, personality, and relationship desires. His family background, particularly the loss of his father, became a significant focus during these evaluations.
Despite initial optimism, Luke confessed he hesitated when producers informed him they had found his match. 'My initial reaction was actually like, "I don't think I wanna do this because it's so intense and I know what the show can be like… there's a lot of editing,"' he said. Ultimately, encouraged by family and friends to take a chance, he agreed to participate.
Chaotic Wedding and Rocky Start
Luke's experience commenced tumultuously on his wedding day when he forgot the rings and had to return to retrieve them, delaying his arrival at the ceremony. 'It was chaotic… you're supposed to be so excited for your wedding… and me having to go back to get the rings made everything 10 times more stressful,' he explained. He claimed the pressure escalated when a producer yelled at him as he rushed to the aisle: 'He just yelled at me, "Luke, what are you doing? Your wife's waiting for you. Hurry the f up."'
Inside, he said he was 'burning' with anxiety and embarrassment, though he appeared composed externally. Luke firmly denied rumours that he purposely forgot the rings, stating, 'That is completely not true.' He also addressed the much-discussed gum moment, taking full responsibility and explaining he had been in the limousine for hours, stressed and dehydrated. 'The gum thing was completely my fault. I'll take ownership of that,' he said.
Luke noted he was attracted to Mel upon first meeting her and entered the experiment with optimism. However, he defended his decision to kiss her on the cheek rather than the lips at the altar, insisting it was not a snub but a respectful choice made because he was late and could sense her negative energy. 'I'd already f'd up a bit… so I just kind of went for the cheek kiss out of respect,' he clarified, rejecting claims he 'friend-zoned' her immediately.
Isolating Honeymoon and Dinner Party Humiliation
Luke described the honeymoon as where the dysfunctional dynamic truly solidified, characterising it as uncomfortable, isolating, and emotionally draining. 'It was kind of awkward… it was super awkward,' he recalled. 'I felt so alone and isolated on the honeymoon.' He asserted he repeatedly attempted to build a connection, even if only a friendship, but felt consistently shut out by Mel's cold, short answers.
The situation worsened during the first dinner party, which Luke identified as one of his lowest points. 'You walk into the pre-drinks… and I can see other people effortlessly getting along with her… getting more from her than I had all week,' he said, describing feeling so uncomfortable he struggled to participate. He also revealed an unseen detail: the couple spent about a week or a week and a half living separately after moving into the apartments, contrary to what was shown on television.
Photo Ranking and 'No Green Flags' Blow
Luke addressed the photo ranking task, stating he was not surprised Mel did not place him first, but acknowledged it still stung. 'I feel like you wanna make them feel secure in the relationship,' he remarked, suggesting most partners would automatically prioritise their spouse. He was particularly blindsided during the red flags, green flags task when Mel allegedly declared he had 'no green flags' and accused him of making her life 'a living hell'.
'No green flags was a bit of a punch,' Luke admitted. 'When I saw that, I actually had to turn my phone off for a couple of days and just disassociate… I was just like, this is so cooked.' He claimed this fallout affected how other brides treated him, making him feel unsafe in the experiment environment.
Instagram Drama and Support Systems
Luke also tackled the Instagram comments controversy, insisting he never instructed anyone to attack Mel online. He explained he only spoke to one sister during filming, who relayed his emotional state to the rest of the family, prompting protective behaviour from his other sisters. 'My other sisters… got annoyed at how Mel was treating me. And then they made those comments,' he said, adding that he immediately told them to delete the posts upon discovering them.
Throughout the ordeal, Luke leaned on his sister and a close friend outside the experiment for support. Inside, he found camaraderie among fellow grooms such as Grayson McIvor, Danny Hewitt, Filip Gregov, and Steven Danyluk, who regularly checked on him. He noted that bride Bec was one of the few female participants to offer support, suggesting others were hesitant due to a strong 'girls' girl' mentality.
Current Relationship with Mel and Personal Growth
When asked if he and Mel could ever be friends, Luke was unequivocal. 'We couldn't even be friends in there,' he stated, revealing they last spoke at the reunion. He expressed hope that online hate directed at her is not excessive, but suggested the backlash might prompt self-reflection. 'It could be a good time for her to just realise how she is or how she can be… and how it can affect people,' he said.
Despite labelling it a 'sour experience', Luke affirmed he does not regret participating in Married At First Sight, as he learned about himself and forged lasting friendships. He also shared how his father's death transformed him, making him more emotionally open. While uncertain about future reality television appearances, he did not completely rule out the possibility. 'Potentially… I wouldn't rule it out,' Luke concluded, reflecting on a journey marked by emotional turbulence and personal revelation.
