MAFS Star Mel Akbay Breaks Silence on Devastating Online Abuse
Married At First Sight bride Mel Akbay has finally spoken out after being engulfed by a tidal wave of online hatred that she claims left her genuinely terrified to step outside her own home. The 2026 participant became one of the most discussed stars of the season following her awkward and ultimately doomed marriage to Luke Fourniotis, which played out before millions of viewers.
Traumatised by Her Own Reflection
The 28-year-old sat down for a raw and unfiltered interview, admitting that watching her portrayal on the show was both "tough" and "traumatising." "I feel like I can breathe again after this intense journey," Mel began, confessing she was blindsided by how she was presented on screen. "Watching it back, I was like, I was the most naïve person in the world," she revealed. "I still take full accountability for the way I acted… but the problem was they took the worst moments of me and they made that my storyline."
As the episodes aired, the backlash escalated so rapidly that she ceased leaving her house entirely. "For the last, like, three weeks since the show has aired, I have been genuinely too scared to go outside," she disclosed. "People think they know Mel from MAFS. Mel from MAFS isn't a real person. I am a real person."
A Journey Begun with Hope, Ending in Humiliation
Mel explained she applied to the show on a whim, believing the glossy promise that experts would genuinely match her with a compatible partner. "I just wanted to take a leap. I was like, you know, I'm single. Why not try?" she said. "When you go through the process… you really believe, 'Oh my God, I'm going to fall in love.'"
That optimism vanished the moment she walked down the aisle and realised Luke was not waiting for her. "As soon as I walked down and I didn't see Luke standing there, I just felt like, I was going to be the joke of the show," she recalled. "My family's here. My best friends are here. What are they going to think?" Luke eventually arrived late, dancing his way in, and Mel admitted she felt more "hurt" and "embarrassed" than furious. "I wasn't angry, angry, but I was upset," she said. "I was humiliated."
Attempting Connection Amidst a Lack of Chemistry
Despite the disastrous beginning, Mel insisted she genuinely tried to make an effort with Luke, sharing a small, unseen detail: she once gifted him a three-pack of his favourite gum because he chews it constantly. However, when it came to romantic chemistry, she acknowledged it simply was not there. "To be honest, when I saw Luke walking towards me, it was kind of like, I just didn't feel anything," she admitted. "He's not my usual type, no, but I don't think he's unattractive… I know Luke is attractive, but was I attracted to him? No."
She was also candid about a truth that followed her all season. "I never wanted to lead him on," she stated. "I wasn't into him… can you imagine kissing someone that you don't have feelings for?" Mel described her earliest weeks on the experiment as fuelled by panic and a feeling of entrapment. "I genuinely didn't want to be there. Like I wanted to leave and I felt like I couldn't," she said. "When you're in an environment where you feel so trapped and you can't escape, it makes you depressed. It makes you mentally unstable."
The Stalking Controversy and a 'Horror Soundtrack' Edit
Mel addressed the controversy surrounding an anecdote from her audition tape that resurfaced during the season, triggering a significant pile-on. "I don't think stalking is funny and I don't condone it," she asserted, stressing she regrets how the story was told. She insisted the incident occurred when she was 17 and was horrified by its on-screen presentation. "They put this like intense horror movie soundtrack behind me, making me look like the guy from You," she explained. "And I'm sorry if I triggered anyone… because I don't think stalking is funny."
As memes and negative commentary spread, Mel decided to step away from social media completely. "I had to take a step off social media. I had to," she said. "I deleted my TikTok. I deleted my Facebook – the hate that crossed the line." She claimed the abuse extended to her friends and family, and detailed the cruelty of viewers targeting her insecurities, including her blinking and her ears, which led her to hide them during yoga sessions.
Claims of Disproportionate Vitriol and Editing Bias
In one of her strongest assertions, Mel suggested the level of vitriol directed at her has been wildly disproportionate compared to other contestants' actions. "In the 13 seasons of MAFS… there have been people who've held abuse… smashed wine glasses… thrown wine… shared explicit images," she said. "And out of all of that, I truly believe I got more hate than any of those instances, all because I didn't like a boy."
She also pointed to the "irony" of being branded "evil" by individuals leaving malicious comments. Mel described her first commitment ceremony as a breaking point, claiming the televised version was far milder than reality. "In real life it was 10 times worse," she revealed. "I was traumatised by that couch session." She accused the experts of being "really hard on the women" and questioned a perceived double standard in handling conflict.
Personal Repercussions and Regret
In a gut-wrenching confession, Mel revealed she stopped wearing her favourite colour, pink, after being mocked online for her "princess" persona. "One of my coping mechanisms… I don't wear pink anymore," she shared. "I just got so much hate for it… I can't say anything 'cause I can't win."
Despite everything, Mel insisted she holds no ill will towards Luke. "I don't think Luke is a bad person," she said. "If I saw him today, I'd just give him a hug." She claimed positive comments she made about him were often left unaired.
In perhaps her most emotional moment, Mel admitted she regrets participating in the show, not due to her own tarnished reputation, but because of the impact on her family. "The hardest part about all of this is seeing how upset it's been my family," she said, revealing her grandmother learned to use streaming and social media just to watch her, only to be exposed to the hate.
Moving Forward with Therapy and Resilience
Mel disclosed she is now seeing a psychologist regularly and is attempting to rebuild after what she describes as a terrifying experience. "My coping strategies… have been speaking to a psychologist regularly," she stated. She is also trying to avoid isolation for the sake of her mental health.
Despite the profound pain, she said the ordeal has forced her to develop greater resilience. "I'm so much more resilient now," she affirmed. Her final message to online trolls was clear: "I would never ever write a mean comment about anyone online, and I would never attack anyone's appearance or their character," she said. "They write a comment and then they just turn around and go to bed. But that comment I read and I think about… and that's not fair to do to somebody just because they didn't like a boy."
