Months after a dramatic betrayal aired on television, Survivor 50 contestant Mike White has disclosed that he still has not spoken with his former ally and co-star Christian Hubicki. The rift stems from Hubicki's pivotal role in orchestrating White's elimination during the episode titled 'Knife to the Heart' on the CBS reality competition.
The Blindside That Shocked a Showrunner
In a candid interview with People magazine, White, the 55-year-old creator of The White Lotus, expressed his profound shock at the blindsiding vote. 'I was totally shocked. It was a classic blindside,' White confessed. 'I really thought my relationships transcended the game.' The betrayal was executed by Hubicki, a 40-year-old robotics professor, who conspired with fellow contestants Emily Flippen and Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick to vote White out after he threatened Flippen's position.
A Friendship Tested by Gameplay
White highlighted the depth of their off-screen friendship, which made the betrayal particularly painful. 'Christian and I have gone on vacations together. There's been so many things we did together, talked, we're texting daily,' he reflected. Despite this closeness, Hubicki has not reached out to the three-time Emmy winner since the show was filmed last June on Fiji's Mamanuca Islands.
Recalling the moment of his elimination, White described maintaining a composed facade. 'I kept a smile plastered on my face while telling everyone, including Hubicki, "Wow, good job, you guys. I get it. It's all good."' However, he later characterized Hubicki's farewell hug as a 'Judas hug' and 'an "I'm sorry I stabbed you in the back" kind of hug.'
Blurring the Lines Between Game and Reality
White admitted that the experience felt like a personal con, extending beyond the confines of the game. 'The game is the game, but I felt like some of it creeped into real life. I felt like I was part of a very long con,' he noted. He also acknowledged his own missteps, stating, 'I overplayed because I thought I was in good places with everybody. It's my own fault.'
Past Collaborations and Future Projects
The betrayal is especially poignant given their previous professional collaboration. White had previously flown Hubicki and his wife Emily to Thailand to film a cameo for season three of The White Lotus during a party scene in episode five. This gesture underscored their real-world bond prior to the Survivor experience.
Currently, White is in France preparing for season four of his acclaimed anthology series. He revealed that he has selected a new slate of Survivor contestants for cameo roles, though he has not yet announced them publicly. 'We start shooting in a few weeks. The cast is finally coming together,' White teased. 'Maybe at some point I'll announce the Survivor people, but I have to tell them first before I tell the world.'
A History of Survivor Crossovers
This is not White's first time integrating Survivor alumni into his work. The two-time Independent Spirit Award winner previously enlisted former contestants such as Kara Kay, Angelina Keeley, Alec Merlino, Natalie Cole, and Carl Boudreaux for small parts in The White Lotus. The upcoming season four ensemble includes notable actors like Helena Bonham Carter, Vincent Cassel, and Kumail Nanjiani.
White himself is no stranger to Survivor, having finished as the runner-up on the 37th season, Survivor: David vs. Goliath, in 2018.
