Susanna Reid has stepped away from her presenting duties on Good Morning Britain this week to concentrate on an undisclosed "special project," leaving viewers to adjust to a temporary lineup of guest hosts. The 55-year-old broadcaster is not expected to return to the ITV daytime show until Monday, 6th July.
Reid's Last Appearance and Breaking News Coverage
Reid was last seen on the famous GMB sofa on Monday, 22nd June, co-hosting alongside Ed Balls. That morning proved particularly dramatic as cameras had been stationed outside Downing Street. Reid hinted that breaking news might emerge during the broadcast, and indeed, later in the programme, Sir Keir Starmer stepped out to announce his resignation as Prime Minister, stating he was not best placed to lead Labour into the upcoming general election and setting a timetable for his departure.
Reid marked the historic moment on Instagram, writing: "BREAKING! At 9.30 this morning the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer RESIGNED as Prime Minister live @gmb. ANOTHER resignation at Number 10 in the last DECADE after Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss, and Sunak."
Reid's Secret Project and Confirmed Return
In the same Instagram post, Reid revealed details about her forthcoming absence, adding: "I'm on a special project and will be back @gmb on Monday 6th July, the week that nominations for a new leader open. See you then @itv." The nature of her mysterious project remains under wraps, with ITV declining to comment.
During her absence, Kate Garraway took over co-hosting duties alongside Ed Balls on Monday, 29th June. Adil Ray has also confirmed he will be filling in on Thursday, 2nd July. On 24th June, Ray shared on Instagram: "Some news! Yes I have not been on in a while but glad to be on a little over the coming weeks, on what remains one the most important shows on UK television, during the most important of times." He added: "Being one of the only (if not the only) Muslims to host a major news show in mainstream peak daytime. So many others have left the traditional outlets, so I am fortunate and grateful of the continued opportunity." Ray listed further dates: Thursday July 2 and 9, Thursday July 30 and Friday 31st, Thursday August 6th and Friday 7th.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
