Vernon Kay Reveals 'Gut-Wrenching' Parenting Moments

Vernon Kay Opens Up About 'Gut-Wrenching' Parenting Moments on Air

BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay has candidly shared what he describes as the "gut-wrenching" realities of fatherhood, drawing from his personal experience as a parent to two daughters with his wife, television host Tess Daly. The 51-year-old broadcaster revealed these heartfelt insights during his regular "good news Wednesday" segment, where listeners submit messages celebrating personal achievements and positive moments.

Relating to a Listener's Parenting Milestone

One particular message from a listener named Matt deeply resonated with Kay. Matt shared that his four-year-old son, Teddy, had attended school without any fuss and with "a smile on his face" for the very first time. As a father himself, Kay immediately connected with this parenting victory.

"We've all been there, we've all experienced that," Kay expressed on air. "There is nothing worse than you turning your back on your little one who's crying because they don't want to go to school. It's the worst feeling as a parent, ah, that is gut-wrenching."

Kay then congratulated Matt from Scunthorpe, suggesting that perhaps a change in morning routine had contributed to Teddy's positive mood, and encouraged him to "do that again tomorrow."

Family Life with Tess Daly and Their Daughters

Vernon Kay and Tess Daly, the former host of Strictly Come Dancing, have been married since 2003 and are parents to two daughters: Phoebe, aged 21, and Amber, aged 16. Over his years hosting the Radio 2 show, Kay has frequently offered listeners glimpses into his family dynamics and parenting journey.

In a previous December broadcast, Kay extended his "thoughts and prayers" to a fellow parent managing two children under two years old. He reflected on how his and Daly's approach evolved significantly between their first and second children.

"You know with your second child... first child, you sterilise everything, dummy falls on the floor, you then put it in the steriliser for another three and a half hours to make sure it's clean," Kay explained humorously. "Second one, just ram it in your mouth, 'there you go, have that'."

Different Parenting Approaches for Each Child

Kay elaborated on their more relaxed strategy with their younger daughter, Amber, noting that they often took a hands-off approach once her basic needs were met. "With Amber, we completely ignored her. She's fed, she's got a clean nappy on, leave her, she'll be alright and she was," he shared. "And now, she sleeps when she's walking around! It worked a right treat."

However, the presenter acknowledged the emotional difficulty of this method, particularly when hearing a child cry. "It's hard though, because they're your kids aren't they so when they're crying you're like, shall I go through the door?" he questioned. "If I go through the door they'll keep crying, it's going to become a routine, if they call, we go, if they call, we go."

Kay concluded that while this tactic "worked with Amber, not so much with Phoebe," highlighting how parenting strategies often need adjustment for different children.

Phoebe Kay's Emerging Independence

While Vernon Kay frequently discusses family life on air, his eldest daughter Phoebe has recently begun stepping out of her parents' shadow to establish her own identity. In 2024, she participated in her first photoshoot with her father, where she spoke about building her career path independently.

Phoebe revealed to The Sun that she typically doesn't disclose her famous parentage when meeting new friends. Discussing her future aspirations, she expressed interest in production and editing work, while leaving presenting to her parents. "I'd love to act, but will leave presenting to my mum and dad," she stated. "I'm just trying to understand what I want to do. I think you go to uni to figure out what you want to do in life."

She added her willingness to gain hands-on experience, even starting in entry-level positions: "I'd like to do some work experience, as it's hands-on, even if I start as a runner and work my way up."
