Let's Stop Pretending Prince Harry's UK Return Will Heal Royal Rift
Harry's Return Won't Heal Royal Rift, Says Expert

Prince Harry's return to Britain next week for the Invictus Games has reignited hopes of a long-awaited royal family reunion. Some optimists envision a real-life sequel to 'With Love, Meghan,' with Meghan making preserves alongside Princess Catherine while the children play in palace gardens. But columnist Alicia Liberty argues this fantasy belongs on a Netflix mood board, not behind Buckingham Palace walls.

The Pattern of Family Fractures

According to Liberty, the uncomfortable truth is that family fractures have defined the Sussexes' public story long before the royal rift. Before Meghan became a duchess, her relationship with her father Thomas Markle publicly broke down ahead of the royal wedding. Her relationship with half-sister Samantha Markle also deteriorated in full public view. Those divisions became global headlines before Meghan had even settled into royal life.

Then, gradually, Harry's own family relationships unraveled. The "Fab Three"—Harry, Prince William, and Princess Catherine—once represented the monarchy's future, with an easy chemistry during Heads Together campaigns and walkabouts. Catherine was often described as the sister Harry never had, bringing warmth and stability between the brothers.

A Dramatic Shift

Today, Harry's relationship with William appears deeply fractured. His relationship with King Charles has also become strained, with reports suggesting limited communication. Liberty notes that Harry's decision to step away from royal life, followed by years of public criticism through interviews, documentaries, and his memoir Spare, amounted to turning his back on Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip during their final chapter.

One poignant moment: Harry arrived hours late at Balmoral after the Queen's death, missing her final moments. Yet he named daughter Lilibet after the Queen's private childhood nickname. The monarch met her great-granddaughter only once during the Platinum Jubilee in June 2022, just months before her death.

Reconciliation Remains Distant

Liberty writes that stepping away from royal life was presented as a path to freedom, but the years since have been dominated by interviews, documentaries, and public conflict. Books, television cameras, and podcasts have continued the narrative. Reconciliation still feels distant.

"None of this means relationships cannot heal," Liberty acknowledges. "Families argue. Families drift apart. Sometimes they find their way back." But she cautions that pretending this July's visit will produce a perfect reunion is optimistic in the extreme.

Meghan's Role

Meghan has become the figure many associate with the family fallout. Liberty notes that correlation does not prove causation, but the chronology—Meghan's family breakdown before marriage, then Harry's relationships unraveling—helps explain public perception. "If Harry's return proves anything, it is that the public remains fascinated by the possibility of reconciliation because they remember what once existed," Liberty concludes.
