Kate Middleton Returns in Green for St Patrick's Day Irish Guards Tradition
The Princess of Wales made a vibrant return to a cherished royal tradition today, visiting Mons Barracks to celebrate St Patrick's Day with the Irish Guards. Dressed in traditional green attire, Kate Middleton carried out her duties as Colonel of the regiment by handing out sprigs of shamrock during the annual parade.
Shamrock Presentation and Military Salute
Kate presented the symbolic shamrocks to officers and guardsmen, who then distributed them along the ranks. In a special moment, she also presented a shamrock to the regiment's mascot, Irish Wolf Hound Seamus. As Colonel, the Princess took the salute during the parade, a role she has performed for many years as part of this fixture in her royal calendar.
Following the parade, Kate awarded long service and good conduct medals to soldiers within the regiment. She then met with Regimental Association Members of the Irish Guards and the 'Mini Micks', junior cadets from Northern Ireland, before joining the official Officers' and Sergeants' Mess photographs.
Supporting the Regiment and Families
The Princess attended the Sergeants' Mess to meet with members from the regiment and their families, recognising their vital contribution to supporting the Armed Forces. This engagement highlights the personal connection Kate maintains with the unit she has led since December 2023, when she took over as Colonel after Prince William became Colonel of the Welsh Guards.
The Dual Role of the Irish Guards
The Irish Guards serve a dual function: as world-class infantry soldiers specialising in frontline combat roles including Machine Guns, Anti-Tank missiles, Mortars, Reconnaissance, and Sniper capabilities, and as the ceremonial personal bodyguard to the Monarch, frequently seen guarding Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
Recently, after providing sustained support training the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the regiment is now focused on modernisation and emerging operational capabilities, particularly in developing the UK's drone warfare capacity.
Emotional Return and Personal Touches
Today's appearance marks an emotional return for Kate, who missed the 2024 parade due to abdominal surgery and a cancer diagnosis. Last year, she not only handed out shamrocks but also put money behind the bar to buy drinks for the regiment, stating it was the 'least I can do' to toast their special day.
While colonels typically wear full military uniform at events like Trooping the Colour, Kate has participated in a carriage and has not worn military attire for such occasions, maintaining her unique approach to the role.
