From a glittering state banquet with an American president to a prince's determined dive on a Brazilian beach, the royal family's year has been captured in a series of striking images by the Press Association's top photographer.
A Year in Focus: State Visits and Ceremonial Duty
Throughout 2025, Press Association photographers have had a front-row seat to the monarchy's busy schedule. The year featured major state visits to Britain, several overseas tours by working royals, and the traditional annual ceremonies that define the royal calendar.
Chief royal photographer Aaron Chown has now selected his personal favourite images from the past twelve months, offering a unique behind-the-lens perspective on the King and his family's engagements both at home and abroad.
Standout Moments from the Royal Diary
One of the year's most significant events was the state visit of US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump in September. The King and Queen hosted the presidential couple for a formal state banquet at Windsor Castle, an occasion where photographic pressure was high. Mr Chown noted the intensity of capturing such a formal image, relying on his skill to perfect the lighting and composition.
The joy of the Trooping the Colour ceremony in June provided another highlight. Amidst a sea of photographers, Chown managed to secure a unique shot of the Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte. The photograph shows both royals in a carriage, looking directly across with beaming smiles at the crowds, perfectly encapsulating the happy atmosphere of the day.
Personal Touches and Overseas Action
Away from the pomp, more intimate moments also made the cut. At the Well Child Awards, which honour seriously ill children and their families, Prince Harry's engaging approach was the focus. Chown's image captures the Prince 'sword fighting' with nine-year-old Gwen Foster, highlighting the fun and uplifting energy he brought to each meeting.
Overseas, the Prince of Wales showcased his sporting side during a visit to Rio. The photographer's favourite action shot shows William giving his all during a game of beach volleyball. The image freezes a moment of intense concentration and physical effort as the Prince rushes for the ball, a dynamic departure from more formal royal imagery.
These curated photographs collectively tell the story of a modern monarchy in 2025, balancing high-stakes diplomacy, public celebration, heartfelt charity work, and relatable human moments, all through the expert eye of the Press Association's chief royal photographer.
