Princess Anne's Hilarious Four-Word Reply to Guard at Visit

Princess Anne made a hilarious comment after detecting an unpleasant smell during a royal garden party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on Tuesday, June 30. The 75-year-old princess was attending the event alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Prince Edward, marking the final royal garden party of the year and the only one held at the official royal residence in Edinburgh. The gathering also kicked off Royal Week, also known as Holyrood Week, which runs from June 30 to July 3.

Princess Anne's Exchange with the Guard

As Anne and Prince Edward chatted with guests, Anne appeared to notice an unpleasant smell nearby. She hilariously asked one of the guards if the odor came from him. According to expert analyst and professional lipreader Nicola Hickling, the guard then shifted the blame to an unknowing King Charles, jokingly telling her: "I think it was Charles."

Anne then added, "We need to move," before making a hilarious accusation: "Perhaps it was Charles." This prompted laughter from those around them.

Anne's Outfit and Relationship with Charles

For the event, Anne wore a coat that has become a regular feature of her wardrobe. Known as the “Nehru Coat” by British brand Shibumi, the cashmere and silk blend piece is embroidered with intricate floral patterns and made in India. She had previously been seen wearing the coat to a Buckingham Palace garden party in 2022, as well as at Commonwealth Day services and Royal Ascot in 2024.

Anne is known to have a lovely relationship with her older brother. A sweet nickname she has for him was revealed during a behind-the-scenes video from the King’s coronation in 2023. In the clip, captured in the documentary Charles II: The Coronation Year, the Princess Royal was seen walking into the Centre Room and addressing the King simply by saying “Hello Old Bean.” The King laughed before greeting his sister.
