Traditional British Baby Names Facing Extinction Revealed in New Study
Researchers have identified classic British names that are dangerously close to disappearing from use entirely. A comprehensive analysis of Office for National Statistics data spanning 120 years has revealed which traditional monikers are fading into obscurity, with some now registered fewer than 150 times annually.
Modern Trends Versus Vintage Classics
The latest ONS figures show unusual names are gradually entering the top 100 registered in England and Wales, including Athena and Yahya. Muhammad claimed the boys' top spot for the second consecutive year, while Noah and Oliver secured second and third positions respectively. For girls, Olivia and Amelia ranked as most popular, with Lily replacing Isla in third place.
Yet amidst these contemporary trends, some adorable vintage names failed to make any significant impact. Names like Freda, Bessie, Cecil and Percy were registered 150 times or fewer in 2024, accounting for just 0.02 per cent or less of babies born that year.
Expert Insight on Naming Trends
Lars B. Andersen, Managing Director at mynametags.com which conducted the research, commented: 'We've been supporting parents in the UK for over 20 years, and have observed first-hand that baby name trends tend to be cyclical in nature.'
'In recent years, we've seen the resurgence of many vintage names, such as Florence and Arthur. This got us thinking about the historic names that haven't experienced a comeback, which set us on our path to discovering the beautiful, traditional names that risk becoming lost in time.'
'We hope that our list can provide some inspiration to expectant parents looking for traditional yet unusual names – and perhaps even save the likes of Freda and Leigh from total extinction.'
Girls' Names Most at Risk
The research identified five female names particularly endangered:
- Freda – Once extremely popular in the early 20th century and consistently appearing in top 100 lists from 1904 to 1934, only seven babies received this name in 2024. With Germanic origins meaning 'peace', it's associated with 'peaceful ruler' or 'joy'.
- Rosina – Despite popularity in the early 1990s, just 12 newborns took this name in 2024. Meaning 'little rose', this floral name with Italian and Latin roots symbolises beauty, passion and love.
- Bessie – Adored in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, only 17 registrations occurred in 2024. Often a shortened version of Elizabeth or Beatrice, this Hebrew-origin name means 'pledged to God'.
- Millicent – An alternative to popular 'Amelia', this name with charming shortened versions like Millie and Mila was chosen by just 42 parents in 2024, compared to 2,448 Amelias. Of Old French and Germanic origins, it means 'strong in work' or 'gentle strength'.
- Winifred – A traditional Welsh name meaning 'blessed peacekeeping', often shortened to Winnie or Freddie. Despite its charm, approximately 390 babies received this name across England and Wales in 2024.
Boys' Names Most at Risk
Five male names were identified as particularly endangered:
- Cecil – Previously popular across the early-to-mid 20th century, this name became officially extinct in 2024 according to ONS data. Of predominantly Latin and Welsh origin, it means 'blind' or 'dim-sighted'.
- Leigh – Just three babies received this name in 2024, despite featuring in its hundreds during the 1980s. Meaning 'meadow' or 'delicate', it has struggled for traction despite trends favoring short, simple names.
- Claude – A mainstay in top 100 names until around 1922, this classic French name was given to just 0.001 per cent of babies in 2024. Derived from Latin, it means 'lame' or 'crippled'.
- Maurice – Once a strong contender from 1904 to 1956, only eight babies were named Maurice in 2024. Derived from Latin name Mauritius, it experienced sharp decline in the 1990s.
- Percy – Of old French and Norman origin meaning 'one who pierces the valley', this name with aristocratic links was given to just 0.02 per cent of babies in 2024. Its longer form Percival went to just 40 babies.
