HBO Max Arrives in the UK with Major Oscar Winners and Prestige Content
After years of anticipation, HBO Max is set to launch in the United Kingdom on Thursday, 26 March 2026. This marks the final European country to gain access to the streaming service, following a rollout that began in the Nordics in 2021. The delay was primarily due to an exclusive licensing agreement between HBO and Sky, which expired in late 2025, clearing the path for this highly awaited debut.
Oscar-Winning Films to Stream from Day One
In a timely coincidence, HBO Max's UK launch comes just after the Oscars, where films like Sinners and One Battle After Another dominated the awards. Sinners secured four Academy Awards from a record-breaking 16 nominations, while One Battle After Another won six statuettes, including Best Picture. Both Warner Bros productions will be available to stream on HBO Max from its first day in the UK, offering viewers immediate access to these acclaimed titles.
Extensive Catalogue of Prestige TV Shows
HBO Max brings a vast library of award-winning television series to British audiences. This includes HBO originals such as Succession, The White Lotus, The Last of Us, and Game of Thrones, as well as Max originals and Warner Bros Television box sets. Notably, the popular series Friends will return to UK streaming on HBO Max after leaving Netflix last year. Additionally, new exclusives like the medical drama The Pitt and upcoming projects such as Lanterns from DC Studios and a Harry Potter TV adaptation will premiere on the platform.
Pricing and Subscription Options
HBO Max offers four entertainment plans in the UK:
- Basic with ads: £4.99 per month, streaming on two devices simultaneously.
- Standard with ads: £5.99 per month, includes Warner Bros films post-theatrical release, streaming on two devices.
- Standard without ads: £9.99 per month, ad-free experience.
- Premium: £14.99 per month, allows streaming on up to four devices, 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Atmos, and offline downloads for up to 100 titles.
Existing Sky and Now customers will not lose access to HBO content. Now is upgrading its £9.99 per month Entertainment membership to include HBO Max at no extra cost, while Sky is incorporating the ad-based tier into its Sky Ultimate TV packages. However, for viewers solely interested in HBO originals, subscribing directly to HBO Max at £4.99 per month may be the most cost-effective option.
Sports Coverage and Additional Features
HBO Max will also feature sports content through TNT Sports, which is moving from Discovery+ to the platform. This includes live coverage of events like the Premier League, Champions League, and UFC. Sports will be available as a standalone subscription or an add-on to entertainment plans, ensuring users only pay for what they want. The standalone HBO Max app has been praised for offering a superior experience compared to Sky Go and the Now app, making it an attractive choice for dedicated streamers.
With its launch, HBO Max is poised to shake up the UK streaming market, providing a comprehensive entertainment hub for film buffs, TV enthusiasts, and sports fans alike.
