Netflix to Quietly Add Acclaimed Oscar-Nominated Short Film
Streaming giant Netflix is preparing to discreetly add a highly praised Oscar-nominated film to its platform, a move that has generated buzz among fans and critics alike. The film, titled The Singers, boasts a perfect 10/10 rating from viewers and features a uniquely assembled cast, setting it apart from traditional productions.
Imminent Release and Oscar Prospects
Without much fanfare, The Singers is scheduled to arrive on Netflix at the end of this week, specifically becoming available from February 13. This addition represents a significant coup for the company, as the filmmakers await the outcome of the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony in March, where the film is nominated for Best Live Action Short Film.
Based on its synopsis, the film draws inspiration from a 19th-century short story of the same name by Russian writer Ivan Turgenev. It follows a similar premise, depicting a humble pub filled with downtrodden men who unexpectedly connect through an impromptu sing-off. This narrative promises a genre-bending experience that is both engaging and accessible.
Unique Casting Approach and Runtime
Directed by filmmaker and cinematographer Sam A Davis, The Singers stands out for its unconventional casting method. Instead of relying on standard auditions for actors who could sing, Davis scoured social media platforms to discover talented singers from viral videos. In an interview with Variety, he explained his inspiration: "I opened my phone, and the first video that popped up was a viral video of a guy busking in the subway station. It was the most beautiful, soulful, raw performance I had ever heard."
Davis elaborated on his vision: "The idea for adapting it was suddenly so crystal clear: I would retell this 1850 Russian short story, but with all these really unsuspecting, viral video singing talents who we would curate from TikTok and YouTube and Instagram from all over the world. Then we can fill a bar up with this group of geniuses in the rough, hiding in plain sight in a pub." As a result, Netflix describes the film as "a celebration of diamonds in the rough and a testament to the power of vulnerability through art."
With a total runtime of only 18 minutes, the short film offers an easy watch that requires minimal time commitment from viewers, making it an attractive option for those seeking quality content without a lengthy investment.
Overwhelmingly Positive Reception
Those who have already seen The Singers elsewhere have expressed unanimous praise, with all user reviews on IMDB awarding it a perfect 10/10 rating. One reviewer shared: "So amazing that I actually cried at the end. Human spirit. I just find the brotherhood so awesome. It's silly little things like this that give me hope for world peace, love, and compassion in our ever changing world. Amazing producer work, directing, and acting."
Another added: "Starts out dark and claustrophobic. Ends with a funny, subtle, twist. Displays humanity in all its grittiness along with all of its joy. Everything in the movie belonged. Nothing superfluous. The acting genuine and heartfelt. A seemingly simple set yet was thoroughly engrossing and completely unique." A third fan commented: "Honestly spectacular. Not a piece of this film that didn’t hit incredibly hard. 10/10." while one simply stated: "For lack of a better word, this is a perfect film. It will bust your heart wide open."
The Singers will be available for streaming on Netflix starting February 13, offering subscribers a chance to experience this critically acclaimed and uniquely crafted short film.
