Netflix has quietly terminated one of its original series after just a single season, with the show's creator publicly confirming the cancellation on social media platform X. Mattson Tomlin, the creative force behind Terminator Zero, disclosed that the streaming giant pulled the plug due to insufficient viewing figures, even though the series garnered favourable reviews from critics.
Creator Expresses Disappointment Over Cancellation
In a candid post on X, Tomlin responded to a fan inquiry about the status of a potential second season, stating bluntly, "It was cancelled." He elaborated that while the critical and audience reception was "tremendous," ultimately, "not nearly enough people watched it." Tomlin expressed his regret at not being able to realise his ambitious vision for the series, which included detailed plans for a multi-season arc.
"I would've loved to deliver on the Future War I had planned in seasons 2 and 3, but I'm also very happy with how it feels contained as is," Tomlin wrote. He hinted at possibly sharing his full five-season blueprint in a future thread, noting, "I've written all of the season two scripts and outlined pretty much all of season three." Despite the setback, he remains open to revisiting the Terminator universe in another format, stating, "Maybe I will return to that world in a different form."
Netflix Offered a Graceful Exit
Tomlin emphasised that he harbours no resentment towards Netflix, describing them as "good partners" who granted him significant creative freedom. Notably, the streaming platform extended an offer to produce additional episodes to provide a more conclusive ending to the series, which Tomlin declined. He explained, "I felt the story I wanted to tell was much longer, and the finale of season one actually left things in a good place." He acknowledged the gesture, adding, "But they didn't have to offer that. Good partners here."
Terminator Zero's Premise and Legacy
The cancelled show was a science-fiction anime series set within the iconic Terminator universe originally conceived by James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. It centred on Malcolm Lee, a character developing an artificial intelligence system in 1997, while simultaneously evading a futuristic assassin targeting his three children. The series aimed to expand the franchise's narrative depth but struggled to attract a broad audience.
Netflix's February Content Lineup
The announcement of Terminator Zero's cancellation coincides with Netflix's recent unveiling of its February programming slate. The platform is rolling out a diverse array of new films and television series, including the highly anticipated return of the thriller series The Night Agent, a new project from Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee titled How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, and the concluding instalment of Bridgerton season four.
Additionally, Netflix is introducing documentaries focusing on figures such as celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, convicted nurse Lucy Letby, and Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder in Matter of Time. A significant addition is the classic medical drama ER, which has experienced a resurgence in popularity following the Emmy-winning success of The Pitt, both featuring actor Noah Wyle.
