Channel 4 Drops 'Bizarre' New Comedy 'Make That Movie'

Channel 4 has quietly launched a new comedy series, Make That Movie, which has been dubbed both the funniest show of the year and an absolute disaster by viewers. The six-part mockumentary premiered its first two episodes on Thursday night (May 28), with all episodes made available for binge-watching on the broadcaster's catch-up service.

What Is Make That Movie About?

The surreal sitcom follows a director named Sam, played by Australian comedian Sam Campbell, as he travels across the UK seeking bizarre and wonderful film ideas from the public. Sam and his team then attempt to bring these ideas to life in just three days, with predictably questionable results. The official synopsis reads: 'Hotshot director Sam and his elite team of filmmakers race against the clock to turn ordinary people's extraordinary, chaotic and surreal ideas into hit movies.'

Cast and Characters

Alongside Sam Campbell, who plays an exaggerated version of himself, the cast includes Lara Ricote as runner Jess, Helen Bauer as sound engineer Pat, Aaron Chen as intimacy coordinator Sebastian, and David Hargreaves as cinematographer Winnie. The ensemble brings a mix of comedic talents to the show.

Mixed Reviews from Critics and Viewers

Reviews have been polarised since the show's release. The Guardian awarded it five stars, calling it 'the funniest TV show of the entire year,' while The Times gave it three stars, branding it 'just so weird.' Sam Campbell himself admitted to Metro that there was a 'big, serious threat of it being t**d of the year,' reflecting the show's divisive nature.

Viewers on social media have been vocal. One disgruntled viewer wrote: 'That make that movie programme with Sam Campbell is absolutely HORRIFICCCCCCCC.' Another remarked: 'A few episodes in on #MakeThatMovie... while it's genius to cast Aaron Chen in roles such as intimacy coordinator and stunt coordinator, he just feels very underused.' A third urged 'everyone watch Make That Movie by Sam Campbell,' while a fourth was unsure, commenting: 'Sam Campbell is great at spontaneous weird ideas but I'm not sure it works so well committed to a script... And Sam won't be winning any Oscars for his acting.'

Where to Watch

All six episodes of Make That Movie are now available to stream via Channel 4's catch-up service. Whether you find it hilarious or horrific, the series is certainly generating conversation.
