Chris McCausland's Journey

McCausland won Strictly Come Dancing in 2024 alongside Dianne Buswell. In an exclusive interview with the ECHO last year, he discussed his autobiography Keep Laughing, where he opened up about losing his sight in his early 20s due to retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary eye condition. He said: "Two years ago, I would never have talked about this. I always kept a lid on things."

Coping with Blindness Through Humour

McCausland explained that his mother and grandmother's experience with the same condition taught him to use humour as a coping mechanism. He said: "Blindness was in my family so it was always just a normal part of life. You've got to laugh at the daftness of it, otherwise it would eat you alive." He credited his Liverpool upbringing, particularly in West Derby, for fostering resilience: "Liverpool is a funny city. Its history, with tragedy and poverty, has built a city that laughs in the face of adversity."
