Death in Paradise viewers have been left stunned after discovering that actor Danny John-Jules, known for playing Officer Dwayne Myers on the BBC crime drama, also appeared in another iconic BBC series, Red Dwarf.
A Beloved Character in Death in Paradise
Since 2011, fans have followed Officer Dwayne Myers as he assists the Saint Marie police force in solving mysteries on the Caribbean island. Although he temporarily left the show for several years, the beloved character returned in 2021 and remained a fixture until the most recent series.
Danny John-Jules' Impressive Career
Before portraying Dwayne Myers, the 65-year-old actor had a notable career, appearing in children's series like Maid Marian and Her Merry Men and M.I. High. However, many viewers were unaware of his role in Red Dwarf, the long-running sci-fi comedy.
The Cat in Red Dwarf
Danny John-Jules played the flamboyant and conceited Cat in Red Dwarf, which originally aired on the BBC from 1988 to 1999. The series follows the adventures of the last surviving human and his companions, stranded three million years in deep space aboard the mining vessel Red Dwarf.
Fan Reactions
Upon recognizing the actor, one Reddit user posted a side-by-side comparison of Danny John-Jules in both roles, captioning it: "This took me way too long, just now realised this is the same actor. Watching a Red Dwarf documentary and seeing Danny John-Jules and realising 'that's Dwayne!' There are so many years between the 2 roles that I never connected them."
Other fans quickly commented in disbelief. One wrote: "My god, you're right... never occurred to me. Just too focused on the characters, I guess!" Another added: "I just found that out recently too. Haven't watched Red Dwarf in years but always loved Cat." A third commented: "Oh WOW. We just started Red Dwarf recently, so we hadn't seen enough of old him yet to realise!"
One fan even noted that Danny John-Jules' Death in Paradise co-star Don Warrington also appeared in an episode of Red Dwarf.
Both Red Dwarf and Death in Paradise are currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
