US actor Matthew Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing in the hit sitcom Friends, has died at the age of 54. He was found unresponsive at his home in Los Angeles, according to law enforcement sources.

Perry's role as the sarcastic Chandler Bing earned him an Emmy nomination in 2002. The show, which aired from 1994 to 2004, followed six friends in New York City and became one of the most successful TV series of all time.

Warner Bros, the show's producer, described Perry as 'a true gift to us all'. Tributes also came from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who attended elementary school with Perry in Ottawa.

Perry struggled with addiction to painkillers and alcohol during his time on Friends, later saying he could not remember three years of filming. He had multiple stints in rehab and suffered a burst colon in 2018 due to drug use.

His other notable roles included appearances in The West Wing and The Odd Couple. Maggie Wheeler, who played Chandler's ex-girlfriend Janice, was among the first co-stars to pay tribute, saying the joy he brought 'will live on'.
