Sundance Film Festival 2027 Confirms Dates and Venues for Colorado Debut
The prestigious Sundance Film Festival has officially announced its 2027 festival dates and key venues as it prepares for a landmark relocation to Boulder, Colorado. This move represents a significant new chapter for the iconic independent film event, which will take place from 21 to 31 January 2027, preserving its traditional late January scheduling.
Confirmed Venues and Community Collaboration
Organisers have revealed more than a dozen primary venues for the festival, including 11 theatres specifically designated for premieres. Among the confirmed locations are:
- The Boulder High School auditorium
- The Casey Middle School auditorium
- The Cinemark Century Boulder
- The historic Boulder Theater
- Several University of Colorado Boulder sites, including the Macky Auditorium Concert Hall and the Roe Green Theatre
Eugene Hernandez, Sundance Film Festival and public programming director, emphasised the festival's commitment to working closely with the local Colorado community. "Nestled at the base of Colorado's iconic Flatirons, venues across the city and CU Boulder's campus provide an ideal setting for festivalgoers from across the world to come together, revel in art, spark conversation, and create unforgettable memories," Mr Hernandez stated.
Historic Move from Utah
This relocation follows the festival's final edition in its long-standing home of Park City, Utah, which concluded last month. Sundance organisers initiated a comprehensive search for a new location, citing that the festival had outgrown the ski town it helped popularise and had developed an air of exclusivity that detracted from its cinematic focus. Boulder was selected after a year-long competitive process involving numerous US cities.
Robert Redford's Legacy and Approval
The festival's founder, Robert Redford, who passed away in September at age 89, established the event and its development programmes for filmmakers in the Utah mountains. He envisioned it as a sanctuary for independent storytelling away from Hollywood's influence. Notably, Redford was an alumnus of the University of Colorado Boulder and gave his approval for the festival's relocation before his death.
His daughter, Amy Redford, a trustee on the Sundance Institute's board, expressed her enthusiasm for the transition last month, acknowledging the significant learning curve involved. She confirmed that the institute's lab programmes for emerging screenwriters and directors, which she described as the most cherished part of her father's legacy, will remain in Utah at the resort he established, approximately 34 miles (54 kilometres) south of Park City.
The 2027 Sundance Film Festival in Boulder promises to maintain its commitment to independent cinema while embracing a new community and setting, offering festivalgoers a fresh experience in the scenic Colorado landscape.
