The Girlfriend, Prime Video's gripping thriller starring Olivia Cooke and Robin Wright, has left viewers on the edge of their seats with its explosive season finale. The six-episode series, released on 10th September, concludes with a cliffhanger that strongly hints at a potential second season.
Based on Michelle Frances' novel of the same name, the show follows estate agent Cherry (Cooke) as she falls for trainee surgeon Daniel (Laurie Davidson), only to face fierce opposition from his overprotective mother Laura (Wright). The series has quickly amassed a dedicated fanbase.
Producer Jonathan Cavendish revealed at the London premiere that while initially planned as a one-off, the team decided to craft a cliffhanger ending to leave room for continuation. 'If people want a second one... episode six has what I'd like to think is a pretty decent cliffhanger,' he told the Manchester Evening News.
Prime Video has not yet confirmed a second season, but Cavendish expressed optimism: 'We originally thought we'll just make one. Then, as we were going, we thought this is so good it would be a pity to end it.' Author Michelle Frances also voiced hope for more episodes, noting that TV production can be unpredictable.
Fans will have to wait to see if the streaming giant renews the series, with viewing figures likely to be a deciding factor in the coming weeks.
