Lee Cronin's horror film The Mummy has arrived on HBO Max as of July 3, 2026, following its theatrical release earlier this year. The movie has drawn strong reactions from viewers, with some describing it as 'as scary as The Exorcist' and warning that it may be too intense for sensitive audiences.
Plot and Premise
The story follows TV journalist Charlie Cannon (Jack Reynor), his wife Larissa (Laia Costa), and their children as they live in Egypt. When their daughter Katie goes missing from their home, the family is torn apart. Eight years later, after moving out of the country, they receive a shocking phone call: their daughter has been found mummified inside an ancient sarcophagus—but somehow still alive. Their relief turns to horror when they bring her home and realize something is deeply wrong.
Critical and Audience Reception
Critics gave the film a relatively low Rotten Tomatoes score of 46%, but audiences were far more impressed. The film currently holds a 72% audience rating on the platform. One fan exclaimed: 'Best horror movie since The Exorcist. Kept us on the edge of our seats.' Another added: 'It's probably the most scariest movie I have ever seen.' A third viewer remarked: 'As scary as The Exorcist! Very Gore! Super, super scary.'
Viewer Warnings
Several viewers have issued warnings about the film's graphic content. One person wrote: 'This movie was so freaking DISGUSTING and nasty. So good though. From skin peeling, nasty toes, and bodily fluid it had me literally gagging. Be warned if sensitive because this was just grooossss. Ugh. Bravo.' Another fan commented: 'If you liked Evil Dead Rise you’ll like this one too.' Yet another added: 'We really liked it! Very intense. Way better than some that were rated better like Smile 2! That one was bad!'
Director Background
The film was helmed by Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin, whose previous directing credits include Evil Dead Rise and the upcoming Evil Dead Burn. Ahead of the release, Cronin teased the film's tone: 'It’s an insane mashup to suggest, but [The Mummy is] almost one part Poltergeist and one part Se7en.'
